Benefits and Challenges


Challenges for students

● Adaptability - switching from in-class (F2F) to online makes the


learning experience different (lacks face-to-face teaching and in-
person collaboration).
● Technical Issues - unstable Internet connection, virus infection.
● LitComputereracy - some students struggle to operate basic software
(i.e., MS Word); some do not know how to troubleshoot common
computer errors.
● Time Management - some students fail to meet homework deadlines.
● Lack of Self Motivation - some instructors do not explain in detail;
delayed feedback from instructors.
● Distractions - social media and other websites divert attention from
the particular task;
● Discomfort - continuous gazing at computer screens causes eye
discomfort or irritation.
Challenges for Teachers
1. Eye contact and screen presence
2. Body language - exaggerate gestures and face expressions.
3. Use of voice - vary the volume and the pace.
4. Minimise distractions - keeping students’ attention.
5. Use of camera - show something other than yourself.
6. Be familiar with the technology
7. Troubleshooting - have a plan B up your sleeve.
A Good Online Teacher ...

● Adapts the objectives of the lesson to the characteristics of the class (age, culture, needs and interests).

● Get their teaching point ready before starting the class.

● Demonstrates tasks and checks understanding.

● Promotes collaborative work.

● Has online and offline resources ready before starting the lesson.
● Is camera aware.

● Uses gestures, smiles, stand-ups (does not sit all the time).

● Includes a variety of tasks to provide a dynamic environment and a variety of visuals to convey meaning.

● Likes trying something new with the class.

● Enjoys the lesson along with the students.
