• Material Used in Worm Wheel

• Applications
Material Used
• The steel is used for high strength worm gears (worm
wheel) and steel may be plain carbon steel or alloy steel.
The steel gears are usually heat treated in order to
combine properly the toughness and tooth hardness.
• The phosphor bronze is widely used for worms drive in
order to reduce wear of the worms which will be
excessive with cast iron or steel.
• Copper is easily shaped, conductive and corrosion
resistant. The gear's strength would increase if bronzed.
• Cast iron provides durability and ease of manufacture.

• Cast steel provides easier fabrication, strong working loads

and vibration resistance.
• Carbon steels are inexpensive and strong, but are susceptible
to corrosion.
• Aluminum is used when low gear inertia with some resiliency
is required.
• Brass is inexpensive, easy to mold and corrosion resistant
• Plastic is inexpensive, corrosion resistant, quiet operationally
and can overcome missing teeth or misalignment

• The most common worm gears are usually made with a brass
wheel and a steel worm. This is because the brass wheel is
typical easier to replace than the worm itself.
• Worm gearing , especially for power transmission , should
have steel worms and phosphor bronze wormgears .This
combination is used extensively.
• Worm gear sets are usually used to reduce speed and increase
torque. Since the worm drive undergoes more contact stress
cycles than the worm gear, the worm drive is usually of a
stronger material.
Applications
• Application requirements should be considered with the
workload and environment of the gear set
• Noise limitation. Worm gears offer the quietest operation.
• Corrosion resistance. Gears exposed to weather or chemicals
should be especially hardened or protected.
• Slow speed worm sets with heavy loads can be surface
hardened steel worms, generally carburized, and bronze
worm gears either phosphor bronze or manganese bronze.
• Worm drives are used as the tuning mechanism for many
musical instruments, including guitars.
Worm Drive in Guitar

• Worm drives are used in presses, rolling mills, conveying

engineering, mining industry machines, on rudders, and
circular saws. Worm drives are used on many lift/elevator
and escalator-drive applications, due to their compact
size and their non-reversibility.
• Vibration and shock resistance. Heavy machine loads or
backlash, the deliberate surplus space in the circular
pitch.
Applications Continue..

• Operation disruption resistance. It may be necessary for

some gear sets to function despite missing teeth or
misalignment. If mounted correctly, most worm drives will
operate if missing a tooth.
• The primary benefit of worm gears is their ability to provide
high reduction ratios and correspondingly high torque
multiplication. And, because their reduction ratio is based on
the number of gear teeth alone, they are more compact than
other types of gears. Worm gears are typically self-locking,
which makes them ideal for hoisting and lifting applications .
Conclusion

• A worm and worm wheel can be used as a solution to

the problem of connecting two shafts at right-angles.
And this mechanism can provide a high velocity
reduction in a relatively compact space .Further more,
the self-locking capabilities provided by the worm
wheel mechanisms can be utilized for applications
which require uninterrupted motion in a single
direction as well as in certain safety mechanisms.
