•Social stratification-
• systematic categorization of individuals based on their roles, functions and statuses.
•Political stratification-
• based on power relations and status of power in the state
LESSON 1: SOCIAL DESIRABLE AND
STRATIFICATION.
•Theory of stratification (Max Weber)
• -a person’s status or position within a stratified social system is determined by his or
her relative power, prestige and wealth.
*wealth- properties owned by an individual
In the Philippines, wealth is measured by ownership of agricultural land.
Sacada system- workers live permanently on the estate of their landlords
*Feudalism- introduced by the Spaniards
•-resulted to exploitation of social relations and production
•-divides the country onto different levels of administration
1. Gobernadorcillo- highest post occupied by the Filipinos
2. Cabeza de barangay- lowest post occupied by the Filipinos
3. Barrio- smallest political unit
• *Power-capacity to influence /control the behavior of individuals
• -potent element that strongly cause or contributes to inequality
• *prestige- defined as esteem, respect, or approval for culturally valued acts
• - can also be a cause of inequality
• Q: who are considered socially- desirable based on wealth, power and prestige?
LESSON 2: SOCIAL MOBILITY SYSTEM
• Social mobility- an individual’s ability to move from one place to another along
stratified position of society
• -dependent on the society
2 KINDS OF SOCIETY
1. Open Society
• -stratification is based on social classes, determined by economic wealth aand
income
• - based on personal efforts and individual achievements
• * Education- allows people to elevate their way of living
1. Closed Society
•Changes or shifts in social positions or social mobility are limited, or even prohibited.
• e.q. Caste System- people are born into their social classes and remain there
•-promotes inequity because individuals are classified according to their
occupational status
LESSON 3: SOCIAL INEQUITY
• Social Inequity - Unequal access to social, political, and symbolic capital of individuals in a
society.
CAUSES:
o Stereotyping
o Prejudice
o Discrimination
• Global inequality- concentration of resources on certain powerful countries.
•
