INTRODUCTION YOURSELF
Skill introduction yourself is the first step of starting communication between nurse and patient. The
most important things of introduction yourself are by saying greeting, contrax time and mention your name.
for example :
* Hello, my name is John
* How do you do
* nice to meet you

YOURSELF
Nurse : Good morning, Mr. John. I’m Michael. I’m on duty this morning.

ENCOURAGING Patient : I see …


PATIENT
Nurse : Have you been fasting since last night?

Patient : Yes, I have


REJECTING
Nurse : Good. Are you ready for the urine and blood test now?

Patient : Of course
ADVISING
Nurse : Do you want anything for your breakfast afterwards?

Patient : Just one apple and banana, thanks.


GIVING OPINION
Nurse : Not a problem.
ENCOURAGING PATIENT
In some activities, one of the nurse’ role is encouraging patient to offer nursing care to the patient.
For example :
* what can I do for you?
*do you need any help?
*do you want me to help you?
*if you need anything, let me know.

Nurse : Did you press the buzzer Mr. John?

ENCOURAGING Patient : Yes, I did


PATIENT
Nurse : what is it?

Patient : Can I have rice for my lunch today?


REJECTING
Nurse : I’ll ask the doctor. Anything else?

Patient : I miss ice cream


ADVISING
Nurse : Wow … Let me ask the doctor. OK?

Patient : Thanks
GIVING OPINION
Nurse : Welcome
REJECTING
Rejecting is used to reject that you do not agree.
For Example :
* No way, Forget it
* I don’t particularly like seafood
* Thanks, but no thanks
* I’d really rather not do it

I don’t think I can accept that


INTRODUCTION
YOURSELF Nurse : Good morning Mrs. John. You’re going home today, aren’t you?

Patient : You’re right. I can’t wait.


ENCOURAGING Nurse : I can imagine.
PATIENT
Patient : Marie… I want you to have this (show something expensive)

Nurse : Oh…thanks Mrs. John, but I can’t accept it.


REJECTING
Patient : Why not? You’ve been taking good care of me. You deserve it.

Nurse : It has been my duty as a nurse here. I’m very sorry.

ADVISING Patient : I see…well…thank you for your help.

Nurse : Thanks anyway for your offer.

Patient : Aha…Can you keep my flowers?


GIVING OPINION Nurse : Sure I can.
ADVISING
Advising is a way which can be used by nurses to give some suggestion for their patient or somebody else.
For example :
* Listen to me …
* Consider this …
* You can take this advice
* You should learn from the lesson

Listen to your mother

YOURSELF Nurse : You need to listen to your mother. I’m sure you’ll be alright.

Patient : I want to see my friends.


ENCOURAGING Nurse : You should be patient. You will see them sooner.
PATIENT
Patient : I miss them

Nurse : I know… I guess they miss you too. But you need to stay. Or….
REJECTING
Patient : Or what?

Nurse : Or … you break your leg again. Be patient. You can’t rush.

ADVISING Patient : How long will I use these crutches?

Nurse : It wouldn’t be long if you listen to my advice.

Patient : Can I play with my ball again?


GIVING OPINION Nurse : Sure.
GIVING OPINION
Givng opinion purposes to give opinion in order to solve the problem.
For example :
* In my opinion, it’s worth considering
* Not everyone will agree with me, but
* I personally think
* I think we should ……

INTRODUCTION No smoking here, please!


YOURSELF
Nurse : anything you want to say?

ENCOURAGING Patient : Yes, I didn’t see a “No Smoking” sign in this area.
PATIENT
Nurse : What do you mean?

Patient : I mean you should put a “No Smoking” sign.


REJECTING
Nurse : Without a sign, you saw some people or visitors are smoking.

Patient : Yes, exactly. You know, I don’t like it. And may be the other.
