What is Antenna:
• The following example shows that the two individuals
communicating with each other. Here, communication
takes place through sound waves. However, if two people
want to communicate who are at longer distances, then we
have to convert these sound waves into electromagnetic
waves. The device, which converts the required
information signal into electromagnetic waves, is known as
an Antenna.
How Smart Antenna works?
• A smart antenna is an array of antenna elements that are
connected Digital signal Processor.
What is Smart Antenna?
 A smart antenna system combines multiple antenna elements with
signal processing capability to optimize the radiation or reception
pattern automatically in response to the signal environment.

A smart antenna is a type of digital antenna that has capabilities related

to tracking or handling signals.

These types of antenna setups are often used in signal processing, radar
and telecommunications.

These are also used to decrease the error during data communication
and also to increase data speed between the source and the
destination.

Smart antennas are also known as adaptive array antennas.

History:
• The first smart antennas  were developed for military
communications and intelligence gathering.

• New opportunities were created for smart antenna in the

year 1990 by satellite broadcasting industries.

• These smart antennas are developed for the development of

the MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology used
in 4G wireless networks.
Human Analogy vs Antenna Analogy:
Smart Antenna Analogy:
Types of Smart Antennas
Switched beam array antenna:
They have several available fixed beam patterns.

Decision need to be made which beam to be accessed at any given

point of time.

The aim of switched beam system is to increase gain according to

the location of user.
 Multiple fixed beam with one beam turn on towards
the desired signal
or
single beam is steered to the desired location
Adaptive Array Antenna:
It is a core system component in mobile networks.

Adaptive array allow the antenna to steer the beam to

any direction of interest while simultaneously nulling
interferring signals.

This antennas can track and locate user signals.

Comparision switched and Adaptive array antenna
SIMO (Single Input – Multiple Output)

 In this method one antenna will be used at the source

and multiple antennas will be used at the destination.
MISO (Multiple Input – Single Output)
In this method, multiple antennas will be used at the source
and only one antenna will be used at the receiver.
MIMO (Multiple Input – Multiple Output)

In this method multiple antennas will be used at both the

source and the destination. This is the most efficient method
amongst all.

Advantages:
Increased number of users :
Due to the targeted nature of smart antennas frequencies can
be reused allowing an increased number of users.
Increased Range:
This can provide a cost saving to network providers as they will
not require as many antennas /base stations to provide
coverage.
Security :
Smart antennas naturally provide increased security, as the
signals are not radiated in all directions as in a traditional
Omni-directional antenna.
Disadvantages:
Larger Size :
Smart antennas are much larger in size than traditional
systems. This can be a problem in a social context, as antennas
can be seen as ugly or unsightly.
More Expensive:
As smart antennas are extremely complex, utilizing the latest in
processing technology they are far more expensive than
traditional antennas
 Complex :
smart antennas are far more complicated than a traditional
antennas. This means that faults or problems may be harder to
diagnose and more likely to occur.
Applications:
Wireless Communication

Military

Satellite Communication

Mobile Communication
Future Scope:

Smart antenna technology can significantly improve wireless

system performance.

 As a result smart antenna has most flexibility in terms of

configuration and upgradeability.
Conclusion:
 Smart antenna are the intelligent antenna systems that
improve the efficiency of wireless transmission.

With this type of technology can easily locate and track the
different wireless targets such as mobiles.

Used for longer distance Communication.
