About Gazipur
In the blend of history and tradition, the Gazipur
district has endless potential. On March 1, 1984,
Gazipur district was initiated in Bhawal Pargana's
vastly forested a r e a and Garik Soil Cell's Tektila. To
the north, Mymensingh and Kishoreganj districts are
placed, to the east, Kishoreganj and Narsingdi
districts , to the south, Dhaka and Narayanganj
districts , and to the west, Dhaka and Tangail
districts. During the Mughal-British-Pakistan period,
Gazipur played a pivotal part in a number of
movements and struggles. On March 19, 1971, the
first armed resistance w a r took place on the
grounds of Gazipur, marking the start of the great
liberation w a r.
Life & Livelihood
In the few number of times I have been to Gazipur, I have seen the people there
being as hospitable as they possibly can. It is a community where everyone knows
each other. The place is also filled with natural blessings, one of which is the
national fruit of the country, Jackfruit. There is jackfruit trees in most parts of the
villages and the jackfruits are very famous for their taste. There are also many
local vegetables and fruits found around the villages growing in plenty. The
roads of the inner part of the villages are well developed which might be
surprising. The roads are quite spacious and are in no w a y under-developed.
People from all walks of life greet us when w e visit there and everyone is
genuinely positive and helpful. The community they have grown into is something
of a strong bond where everyone is helping each other in all kinds of necessities.
River Shitalakshya
Civilisation mainly initiated from this very river and spread around with time. The river is
still being widely used all over the villages and communities.
The fishermen are seen working day and night for
fish farming which is quite popular in the district. The
daily supply of fish market in Gazipur Sadar and
Sripur markets were estimated at 2 - 3 and 1-1.5 tones
respectively. Carps are thought to account for
about half of all fish sold in markets. 13% hilsa, 9 %
catfish, 7 % small indigenous fish, 6 % prawns and
shrimp, 5% tilapia, and 12% other fish, including
marine species. Market system, species quality, size,
and weight all affect the prices of fish, and it has
been established that the price per kilogram of carp
rises as the fish increases in size.
Development
The district has seen changes in many different sectors, specially in the industrial sector.
While Bangladesh's industrial sector has flourished since independence, much of it is
concentrated in only a few districts. The total labor force employed currently in this
district has increased to be more than anywhere in the country. Few of the largest
industries of the countries are situated in this district and are continuously expanding.
The district has also seen some of the most renowned institutes of the country being
built within the last few decades and the rate of education has also been increasing in
lower levels of education Most development in the district has been found in sectors
such as-
