smaller scale than what was depicted in stories and
legends.
During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance
scholars believed that the Trojan war was
Pure invention, but in the past century
archeologists and geologists have excavated
sites that correspond topographically to the
geography of Troy and surrounding sites as
they were described in The Iliad.
The odyssey is Odysseus’10 years struggle
to return home after the Trojan war.
Odysseus battles mystical creatures and
faces the wrath of gods, his wife Penelope
and his son Telemachus stave off suitors
vying for Penelope’s had and Ithaca’s
throne long enough for Odysseus to return.
The odyssey ends as Odysseus wins a contest
to prove his identity, slaughters the slaughters
the suitors, and retakes the throne of Ithaca.
The poem was intended for oral performance. It
was written in dactylic hexameter that is, each
line consisted of six feet or metrical units, and
each foot consisted of a dactyl (a stressed
syllable followed by two unstressed syllables).
The epic poem the odyssey has its own
significance and relevance in literature as it
is considered as the oldest epic poem which
exerted vast influence on most of the
authors and philosophers in ancient Greece
as well as epic poems written in Roman,
medieval and Renaissance Times as The
Aeneid, The Divine comedy and Paradise
lost.
1. When we talk about its relevance to modern day, we see its
text teaches us to respect .The dead and it also suggests
how to live our lives.
2. The theme of hubris and arrogance in the text conveys the
reader that excessive pride in often detrimental to one’s life
as we see in the Penelope’s suitors who seem to embody
the sense of pride which ultimately leads to embody the
sense of pride which ultimately leads to their downfall.
3. We see the theme of hospitality permeates the entirely of
the text. It demands individuals to be kind or else face The
Wrath of Zeus. The odyssey teaches us that through
determination, hard work and perseverance one can
succeed even the most dangerous tasks.
In fact homer’s The Iliad and the odyssey
affected western standards and ideas. The
Greeks regarded the great the great epics as
something more than works of literature.
They valued them not only as a symbol of
heroism but also as an ancient source of
moral and even practical instruction.
