        Introduction
• Conventional Vehicles use fossil fuels which result in a lot carbon emissions.
• An Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) attempts to provide an environmentally and
economically cheaper method of travel by relying on the battery, while the
engine serves to charge the battery or provide torque where the battery cannot
meet load requirements
• Since past 15 years (2005 DARPA grand challenge) a lot of manufacturers are
aiming for driverless vehicels.
• Although complete realization of this task has not been achieved, a fair amount
of headway has been made in this regard .

Introduction
• Our aim is to attempt to fuse these two hot research areas by
blending fuel efficiency and energy optimization with motion
planning and control techniques for autonomous systems.
• Once this research has been finalized the results will provide
advances that has a good industrial scope and will be in line
with what major car manufacturers are attempting to do
(Tesla, BMW, Morris, etc.,)

3
Objective/Problem Statement
• Vehicle automation industry is already a huge industry but there is a
problem that often these vehicles are not energy efficient and we are also
motion planning for this vehicle.
• Moreover, a driverless car is our objective which covers a certain distance
while optimizing desired variables under constraints.

Knowledge Domains Involved
 in Project
• The automation part of this project involves the control domain,
moreover building a prototype for an electric engine will also fall the
electronics domain.

Language, Tools and Hardware
• Matlab / simulink (for designing and testing control systems)
• ROS (Robot Operating System)
• Python
• LiDAR
• RADAR

Design and Development Process
• The design and development of this project will happen slowly and
steadily and due to hardware limitations, we will first simulate It
afterwards we will built a hardware.Following is a simplified block diagram
for an Electric Vehicle.

Dynamic Constraints

• Few of these parameters can be used as dynamic constraints such

as vehicle mass, velocity and yaw angle..

Video of MPC

• Car Path Planning

• This is a short video by Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab which gives

an insight about model predictive control technique.

Project  Budget
• Around 50k-60k

 Project  Timeline
• The first 2 months require extensive study on this project and gathering all
the information regarding this system and more specifically, the electric
vehicle itself.
• As we have studied some control courses but in the domain of autonomous
vehicles we need some more, hence I have enrolled myself into short courses.
• One such online course is offerred by University of Toronto in Self-Driving
Cars.
• Simulation will also be done and for that we will need 1 month.
• After that, we will start our construction on the Control solution and it will
take another 2 months.

 Any Risk Area
• On an inclined plane, if the torque of the motor is not enough than
there is a risk of car reversing back because the battery cant provide
a lot of energy in a limited amount of time.
• If the car is stuck in a traffic jam and the battery runs out of power it
will create problem for the passengers.
• The calculated shortest trajectory may not be physically realizable.

Justify following
• Ingenuity/Scope of Project : we are merging the autonomous and electrical
vehicles.
• Market Value of the product: Autonomous vehicles are still not available in
Pakistan.
• Environmental Aspect : As this is an electrical vehicle hence it is quite
environmental friendly.
• Lifelong learning: We will learn about the control and automation of
vehicles.
