INVENTION
In 1839 Alexandre Edmond Becquerel discovered the
photovoltaic effect

Over 100 years later, in 1941, Russell Ohl invented the solar cell,
shortly after the invention of the transistor.

Light (photons) striking certain compounds, in particular metals,

causes the surface of the material to emit electrons
SOLAR TRAIN
Indian Railways on July 14 launched first solar-
powered DEMU (diesel electrical multiple unit) train
from the Safdarjung railway station in Delhi.

It hosts over 16 solar panels in it

 The train has a power back-up and can run on battery

for at least 72 hours.
SHIRDI SAI KITCHEN
The solar kitchen was installed in the year 2014
It hosts over 73 solar dishes producing 4200 kg of
food per day for the devotees.
Saves about 1 lakh kg of LPG and a total cost of 60
lacs till date.
Feeds 40,000 devotees
per day
 Asia’s largest solar kitchen
Contrast
Solar energy is a renewable for of energy, whereas
fossil fuels come under Non-renewable source of
energy.
There is an abundance of solar energy whereas all
countries are facing a shortage of fossil fuels.
Solar energy usage avoids the cause of pollution
whereas fossil fuels are the major reason for air
pollution.
Running cost of solar energy is very less, whereas for
fossil fuels,its very high.
POLLUTION
Most of this air pollution we cause results from the
burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas
 approximately 78 percent of global warming
emissions are energy-related emissions
of carbon dioxide.
 Long-term health effects can include chronic
respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and
even damage to the brain
Most common sources are
transport vehicles and industries.
What’s A Thermal Power Plant
A thermal power station is a power station in which
heat energy is converted to electric power.
In most of the places in the world the turbine is steam-
driven.
The energy to boil the water,so as to convert to
steam, fossil fuels like coal are burnt.
By rotating turbines,
electricity is generated
And supplied.
The Burning Coal
When coal is used for electricity generation, it is
usually pulverized and then burned in a furnace with a
boiler.
Coal contains sulfur and other elements, including
dangerous metals such as mercury, lead, and arsenic,
that escape into the air when coal is burned.
Burning coal emits large amounts of carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere.
