WHAT IS A GROUP DISCUSSION?

Group Discussion or GD is a type of discussion


that involves people sharing ideas or activities.
People in the group discussion are connected with
one basic idea. Based on that idea, everyone in the
group represents his/her perspective.

• BRAINSTORMING
• NOMINAL GROUP TECHNIQUE
• DELPHI TECHNIQUE

Brain Storming
• A group of 6 to 12 people sit around a table.
• A group leader states the problem in a clear manner so that all
participants understand it.
• Members then suggest as many alternatives as they can in each
length of time.
• No criticism is allowed, and all alternatives are recorded for
later discussion and analysis.
• Main purpose is to generate ideas.

STEPS OF NOMINAL GROUP


TECHNIQUE
1. Members independently and silently write down
their ideas on the problem.
2. Each member presents a single idea. No discussions
take place until all ideas have been recorded.
3. Discussion takes place.
4. Each ideas is ranked silently and independently.
5. Final decision is taken based upon the highest
aggregate ranking.

STEPS OF DELPHI TECHNIQUE


1. The problem is identified, and the members are asked to
provide potential solutions.
2. Each member anonymously and independently completes the
questionnaire.
3. Result is compiled at a central location, transcribed, and
reproduced.
4. Each member receives a copy of the result.
5. members are asked for their solution; the results provide new
alternative solutions.
6. The steps are repeated until a common consent is reached.
