INTRODUCTION
• According to the Building Material Promotion Council (BMPTC), India
generates an estimated 150 million tonnes of construction and demolition
(C&D) waste every year. But the official recycling capacity is a meagre
6,500 tonnes per day (TPD) - just about 1 per cent.
• In India C&D waste has two components-
Major components- 1)concrete 2)bricks 3)Plaster 4)steel 5)rubble 6)stone
7)Timber
Minor components- 1)Conduits (iron, plastic)
2)Pipes (GI ,iron, plastic)
3) Electrical fixtures (copper/ aluminum wiring, wooden baton, switches, wire
insulation)
4) Panels (wooden, laminated)
5) Others (glazed tiles, glass panes)

Typical Composition of Indian C&D waste

• Concrete is the prime construction material used in practice. Constituents of
concrete are binding material(cement),fine aggregate and coarse aggregate and
water.
• Aggregates are naturally available and depleting day by day due to over
exploitation for the sake of development activities. Owing to growing demand
aggregates will not be available in plenty in near future as their stack is limited.
• It is worthwhile to seek alternative for naturally available aggregate. Owing to
growing construction activities and renovation of structures, demolition wastes
are produced in large quantities which are kept in abundance in low lying area or
at disposal sites.
• The land over which the demolition wastes are disposed, deprives further land
use forever for other purposes.
• This increased quantities of demolition debris, the continuing shortage of
dumping sites, increase in the cost of disposal land transportation and above all
the concern about environmental degradation.
RECYCLED AGGREGATES
• Recycled aggregates are the aggregates produced from the processing of
previously used construction materials such as concrete or masonry.
Recycled aggregates consists of hard, graduated fragments of inert
mineral materials, including sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, rock dust,
or powder.
WHY RECYCLED AGGREGATE ?
• Due to rapid growth in population and urbanization, the natural resources are depleting.
• The construction industry is facing non availability of good quality aggregates within
reasonable distances.
• High cost of good quality crushed aggregates, as compared to Recycled aggregates.
• An enormous increase in the quantity of waste materials and the shortage of dumping sites.
• Shortage of dumping sites has resulted in sharp increase in transport and disposal
costs.
• High dumping cost for demolished waste, because it has to be dumped away as for
as possible form construction site.
SOURCES OF RECYCLED AGGREGATE
• Construction and demolished waste generated due to natural disasters, for
future development the old buildings are replaced by new ones, and war
inflicted damages.
• Crushing of Portland concrete pavement
• Tested specimens from laboratory.
• Concrete from ready mix concrete plants and precasting units.
• Worn out rail ballast.
SCOPE OF STUDY
• Construction industry is one of the fastest growing industry in the world hence producing waste at a
greater extent than expected. The waste so produced can be reused by converting it into usable form
contributing directly or indirectly to the environment. Following are the scope of recycled aggregates:
1. Decrease in the amount of disposal of demolished waste hence more availability
of land.
2. Recycled aggregate can be used as earth filling in road construction.
3. Can be used in construction of rigid pavements.
4. Recycled aggregates can be used as ballast in railways.
5. Recycled aggregate with upgraded properties can be used as a replacement for
natural aggregate.
NEED OF STUDY
• If construction waste is not utilized properly, It will produce larger environmental
problems. Also intensive use of aggregates in construction is very important.
• Study of use of recycled aggregate is of particular interest because its use can
considerably reduce the problem of waste storage and also it helps in the
preservation of natural aggregate resources.
• The use of recycled aggregates in concrete opens a whole range of possibilities in
the reuse of materials in the building industry. The utilization of recycled aggregates
is a good solution to the problem of an excess of waste material, provided that the
desired final product quality is reached.
