Business Intelligence
• Business intelligence (BI) refers to computer-based techniques used in
spotting, digging-out, and analyzing business data, such as sales revenue by
products and/or departments, or by associated costs and incomes
• BI technologies provide historical, current, and predictive views of business
operations
• Common functions of business intelligence technologies are
– Reporting
– Online analytical processing
– Analytics
– Data mining,
– Business performance management
– Benchmarking
– Text mining
–  Predictive analytics
Components of BI

• Data Warehouse- A Significant Step Forward

– A data warehouse is a consolidation of data from many sources across various business subject areas,
arranged in a way that promotes access and interpretation of the data by business users.
• Extraction, Transformation, and Loading
– Extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) is the process that pulls data, does any necessary
transformations
• Data Warehouse Model
– The data warehouse model is the unique arrangement of the database tables to capture relationships
among data that are more easily accessible and understandable by end-users of the data.
• Metadata
• Metadata is “data about data.”
– There are two main kinds of metadata:
• IT metadata
– IT metadata is information about the data warehousing processes, such as the extraction,
transformation, loading process, error trapping, system usage, security and overall
administration.
• Business metadata.

Beyond the Data Warehouse—Turning Information into Intelligence

• Pre-established Static Reports-Static reports are compilations of information on

business metrics (profit, revenue, performance, and other performance measures)
and output to any number of mediums (Web pages, spread sheets, Word
documents, PDFs, and other media)

• User-Defined Reports and Queries-One of the key benefits of integrating data is to

provide business users easier access to this data

• Online Analytical Processing-Online analytical processing (OLAP) provides

interactive analysis and reporting using multidimensional views of data.
– OLAP cubes, or simply “cubes.”

• Performance Dashboards and Scorecards-Dashboards and scorecards are often
used interchangeably

Alternative Foundations for Business Intelligent Systems

• Data Propagation - Data propagation is moving data from one

application to another in real time. There could be several reasons why
data needs to be exchanged between major source systems in real time.
Many accomplish this with one-way data bridges.

• Data Federation - Rather than move data using either ETL or EAI
techniques, the federation approach leaves the data at the source but
allows users access to data in such a way that enables them to integrate
and interpret the data in relationship to data they view from other
disparate sources.

Improving the Quality of the Decision Making By Using Business Intelligence Solutions

• BI systems take in information from an array of sources ranging from databases to ERP
applications. They work in an iterative fashion wherein each decision reached is again fed in
as an input for the further decision.

• Data warehouse is a conglomerate of data, specially produced to support management

decision making for business performance.

• Microsoft offers Microsoft SQL Server 2008 which can be used as a BI system. Some of the
key features offered by the system are:

–Marketing analysis
–Sales analysis
–Analysis for distribution chain (retail)
–Balanced scorecard
–Financial analysis
–Budget planning
–Geospatial analysis, etc.
A Business Intelligence System Design Based on ASP Platform

• Need of an ASP Platform based system design

 ASP Platform based system design is required to address the in-formalization
issue in medium-sized and small manufacturing enterprises.

• Applications of ASP
 Application Service Provider: It provides application system in various ways such
as Internet configuration, leasing, business applications solutions management,
etc. This service platform does the following:
 Enables enterprises to work collaboratively
 Entrusts providers with the corresponding capacity of production for the
provision of product design.
 Prepares complex parts of NC procedures and processes.
 Provides processing equipment.
 Manages product data, human resources, projects, distribution, etc.
 Provides product maintenance, system maintenance and other technical
supports.
Business Intelligence and E-Discovery

• E-discovery simply refers to discovery of electronically stored

information. E-discovery process includes the identification,
collection, preservation, processing, review, analysis,
production, and presentation of electronically stored
information

• System migrations pose a particular problem in e-discovery

• Business rules and data structures in legacy systems could be

significantly different from those in current systems causing
complications in terms of data compatibility and translation
– Ex: When two companies are merged together
Assessing Benefits of Business Intelligence

BI gives predictable as well as unpredictable benefits

(realized after using BI for some time) as below:

• To improve support for business decisions

• Increase in revenue
• Increase in profit
• Improved customer satisfaction
• Increased market share

Managers in conjunction with IT departments and users

should try to ensure that this is indeed the case.
