MODULE 1: TYPES OF TESTS


Types of tests by purpose

• Diagnostic test
• Placement test
• Achievement test
• Practice test
• Proficiency test

Placement tests

• All four skills often tested


• Progressive (easy->hard)
• To place students into the right level class

Diagnostic tests

• Give information about students’ current strengths and weaknesses


• Can inform teachers about their aptitude (natural ability to do smt)
• Help students focus on students’ gaps in their knowledge

-> Curriculum plans/ lesson plans

Achievement tests (Progress tests)
• All four skills are tested
• Required by different stakeholders in education (school, parents…)
• Take place in different time frames (after each unit, each two units…)
• Indicate the knowledge that the students are either doing well or havi
ng problems with.
• Suggest teachers go over again the areas that students need further
practice

Practice tests

• For revision
• Should be as close as possible to the content and format of the real
examination
-> to prepare students for the end-of-term test

(Standardized tests)
• General English (Cambridge tests: KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE)
• Business English (TOEIC, Cambridge BEC, BULATS)
• Academic English (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE) (paper test, computer test)
