What is Series Resonant DC-DC
Converter ?

 It is DC-DC converter whose output voltage is governed

by its switching frequency.

 The term Series represent & that the capacitor & inductor
are in series connection in its resonant circuit.
Why we use Series
Resonant DC to DC
converter instead of
DC to DC converter
?
DC to DC Converter (Chopper) :

 It is an electronic circuit which converts fixed DC input voltage

to variable DC output voltage.
 It is basically a voltage regulator consisting of Switches,
inductor & Capacitor for Power Conversion.
Disadvantages of using DC-DC Convertor :

Switching Converters are prone to noise.

They are expensive.
 choppers are inadequate due to unsteady voltage & Current Supply.
 Switching losses.
 More ripple current.

To overcome these disadvantages,
we are designing & implementing
a series Resonant DC-DC
Converter with full bridge
Switching .
 Lets see how it works…….
Working of Series Resonant DC to
DC Controlling
Involves 3 stages :
Converter :
1st Stage - Input DC voltage is converted to Ac by means of full-bridge
inverter
2nd Stage - turning the switching frequency in order to obtain resonance
3rd Stage - The AC Signal is converted back to DC through full- bridge rectifier .

• Ideally, converter output power is equal to its input power

• voltage drop Vch introduced during switching of 4

MOSFET in inverter part leads to Power loss, which could
reduce efficiency
Converter design :
DC-DC Converter is made up of 2 parts

Driver Circuit & Main Circuit

In main circuit input voltage was Converted to AC & then

converted back to DC
Electronic Switches used in inverter circuit are MOSFET
 Design of PWM controller circuit PWM signals are used for
Controlling Switching Mechanism of the full-bridge inverter.

 In our Converter, we utilize Arduino UNO R3 for this purpose.

 PWM signals were generated in the range of 10-100 KHz with

duty cycle of 50%.
 These Signals were 5-volts amplitude.

 But this value was not enough to drive

the inverter's MOSFET into Saturation
area.

 Optocoupler was employed for

amplifying these Signals and a value of
12V enough these to fire this MOSFET.
In our inverter circuit, we used IRFZ44N series MOSFET for
switching. Its specification is presented below,

 Drain source breakdown voltage: 55 V

 Gate source breakdown voltage: 20 V

 Gate threshold voltage Vth : 4 V
 Drain source ON resistance RDS(ON): 0.0175Ω
 Fig. shows the relationship between gate
to- source voltage VGS and ID of IRFZ44N.
 As shown in Fig. theoretically a VGS value
of 5 V is enough to drive the MOSFET to
ON mode.
 However, practically it is not in such way , We set VGS to
maximum allowable values of 12V .

Design of full-bridge rectifier :
 We used diode for rectification
 Ultrafast diode of UF4007 Series was put in
place...
 This type of diode has a voltage 1000 V limit &
Current limit of 1A.
