Technological Competency as

Caring: A Model for Nursing

Patient participation

Patient participation means involvement of the

patient in decision making or expressing
opinions about different treatment methods,
which includes sharing information, feelings and
signs and accepting health team instructions.

Consent of Admission in the hospital.

• Mark did not manage his health. He ate
poorly, smoked regularly, exercised rarely, and
saw his doctor once every five years.
• Result?
• It could have been avoided if?
• Patient engagement in healthcare is defined as
patients actively engaged in gathering
information and making decisions about their
symptoms, illnesses, and treatment options.

• Patient engagement is a partnership between

patients and the clinical professionals with whom
they interact. Clinicians engage and communicate
with patients in their care, and patients share in
making decisions and managing their conditions.
• Patient engagement is voluntary

• clear explanation of directives and policies and

mutual understanding of people and
community of healthcare programs are
considered rules of engagement and active
participation of people, which will lead to
long-term partnership of both sides.

• Hormonal Therapy:
• It’s not enough for doctors and nurses to
reach out and provide information and
options.
• If patients don’t respond and contribute to
managing their health, patients are not
engaged.
• Since medical professionals are the experts,
some may feel patients should just follow their
advice.
• But research shows that when patients have a
role in making decisions, they form a greater
understanding and stronger commitment to
healing and health maintenance processes.
• Higher patient engagement yields improved
patient outcomes and cost savings.
• Patient engagement research shows that the
least-engaged patients are twice as likely to
delay care and are three times more likely to
have unmet medical needs than the most-
engaged patients.
As patients become more engaged with their
care, we see “higher levels of preventive
health behaviors and preventive care, as well
as increased self-management of health
conditions.”
• The participation causes:
• improved control of diabetes,
• better physical functioning in rheumatic
diseases,
• enhanced patients' compliance with
secondary preventive actions
• improvement in health of patients with
myocardial infarction
• Respect for the person is communicated by
the notion of person as whole or complete in
the moment.
• Being complete in the moment signifies that
there is no insufficiency, no brokenness, and
no absence of something.
• Modern nursing care has been called a mixture of high
tech and high touch, a way to describe the traditional
nurturing and compassion of a nurse in combination with
the advanced health care technology of the 21st century.

• Technology, such as computers and monitoring

equipment, is used in nearly every aspect of nursing.

• Many of the applications nurses use are wireless. Today’s

nurses must not only know how to care for patients, but
how to use technology safely and appropriately in their
day-to-day work.
How Do Nursing Technologies Help Patients?

As more of the population ages, as life

expectancy increases, and as the nursing
shortage continues, these new medical
technologies are crucial for continued patient
care and the healthcare system at large.

• New medical technologies can make life

easier for medical professionals and patients
alike.
• Certain technologies can make patient care
easier and more efficient for the doctors and
nurses who manage a large patient load.
• They can also assist patients in getting the
care they need with more convenient and
accessible options.
seven stand-out technologies transforming medical
care.
1. Automated IV Pumps. self-pumps that allow patients to increase a
controlled amount of pain medication for themselves.
2. Portable Monitors
3. Smart Beds
4. Wearable Devices

• Wearable devices and mobile apps are transforming the healthcare industry.
Devices that help track heart rates, exercise, sleep, respiration, and more are
helping people take their health into their own hands.
Electronic Health Records (EHR)
6. Centralized Command Centers
7. Telehealth and Apps
Nursing Education

• With the advancements of new technology in

the healthcare industry, it’s crucial for nurses
to keep abreast of these innovations and
elevate their capabilities to match what both
patients and the industry require for
exceptional care.
• Education is key to navigating these new
waters.
