Expressions of quantity

• Expressions of quantity tell us how many or how


much of something there is.
Compare these two sentences:
- We get a little rain in spring.
- Many people live in London.
• We use a little with uncountable nouns like rain,
snow, pollution etc. We cannot use a little with
countable nouns.
• We use many with countable nouns like people,
cars, chairs etc. We cannot use many with
countable nouns.
A. Some and any ( beberapa )

• Some dan any bisa diikuti countable noun dalam


bentuk plural atau uncountable noun.
• Some digunakan dalam kalimat positif, sedang any
digunakan dalam kalimat negative atau interrogative.
Baik some maupun any kalau diikuti uncountable
noun ( kata benda tak terhitung ) di artikan sedikit.
Example :
• She needed some sugar for her coffee
She didn’t need any sugar for her coffee
• There are some students in front of the Museum
Are there any students in front of the Museum ?

(+)Astuti wants some salt for her cooking
(-) Astuti doesn’t want any salt for her cooking
(?) Does astuti wants any salt for her cooking?

(+) Agus uses some water to clean the motorcycle


(-) Agus doesn’t use any water to clean the
motorcycle

motorcycle?
B. Many , much, a lot of ( banyak )

• Many diikuti oleh countable noun bentuk plural


(jamak ), many cars, many doors etc
• Much diikuti oleh uncountable noun; too much
sugar, many leaves etc
• A lot of diikuti oleh countable maupun
uncountable noun, a lot of cars, a lot of salt.
Example :
• I saw many cows in the garden.
• John has much money, so he wants to treat us.
• I need a lot of paint to paint the wall.
C.  a few, a little ( sedikit )

• a few di gunakan dengan countable noun


bentuk plural.
• a little di gunakan untuk uncountable noun.
Example :
• Hasan made a few mistakes
• I have a little money.
D. Both ( keduanya ), several ( beberapa ), all
( semuanya ) / all of
• Both ( keduanya ), several ( beberapa ), all
( semuanya ) / all of di gunakan dengan
countable noun bentuk plural.
Example :
• Both of the girls are beautiful.
• Several cats are running.
• All people need water in their lives.
E. A large of, a small amount of
• A large amount of, a small amount of
digunakan dengan uncountable noun.
Example :        
• The boy has eaten a large amount of ice
cream.
• Father is buying a small amount of paint.
