TOPIC : STUDY OF AC SERVOMOTOR WITH
THEIR APPLICATION AND ADVANTAGES
INTRODUCTION

Servomotor
 A servomotor is a rotary actuator or linear actuator that allows for precise control of angular
or linear position, velocity and acceleration. It consists of a suitable motor coupled to a sensor
for position feedback.
 Servo motor are called as control motors as they are used in feedback control system
output actuator.
 Servo motor is a simple electric motor which is controlled with the help of servomechanism
that means a typical closed loop feedback system.
TYPES OF AC SERV
TYPES OF AC SERVOMOTOR

AC SERVOMOTOR

Two phase ac Three phase ac

servomotor servomotor
TWO PHASE AC SERVOMOTOR
CONSTRUCTION :
Two main parts of ac servo motor are rotor and stator
ROTOR :
Squirrel cage rotor :
 Rotor is made up of permanent magnet . The construction of rotor is usually
squirrel cage or drag cup type .
 The squirrel cage rotor is made up of laminations .Air gaps are kept small as the
resistance is very high.

 The rotor bars are placed on the slots and short circuited at the both ends by end
rings.
 The squirrel cage rotor have large length and diameter of the rotor is kept small in order to
reduce inertia and to obtain good accelerating characteristics.
Drag cup type rotor :

 In drag cup type there are two air gaps.

 The rotor of the Drag cup servo motor is made of a thin cup of the nonmagnetic
conducting material.
 A stationary iron core is placed in the middle of the conducting cup. This
arrangement completes the magnetic circuit.
 As the rotor of the motor is made of thin material, its resistance will be high, which
results in the high starting torque.
STATOR :
 Stator has two distributed windings .
 These windings are displaced from each other by 90 degree electrical .
 One winding is called main or reference winding and this winding is excited by ac
voltage.
 The other winding is called control winding and is excited by variable control
voltage of the same frequency as the reference winding but have phase
displacement of 90 degree electrical.
WORKING

 A voltage Vm is applied to the main or

reference winding at zero angle, while Va is the
voltage applied to control winding which control
the torque-speed characteristics with 90° angle.

 The 90° space displacement of the two

windings and the 90° phase difference
between the voltages applied to them result in production of rotating magnetic field in
the air gap.

 This rotating magnetic field is cut by rotor conductors and emf is induced in
them. Since rotor is short-circuited, the rotor currents flow.

 The interaction between rotor currents and rotating magnetic field results in
torque acting on rotor. Due to the torque acting on the rotor, it is set in motion.
THREE PHASE AC SERVOMOTOR

 Three phase induction motors with the voltage control are used as a Servo motor
for the applications in the high power Servo systems.
 A three phase squirrel cage induction motor is a highly nonlinear coupled circuit
device. It is used as a linear decoupled machine by using a control method known as
a Vector Control or Field Oriented Control.
 The current in this type of machine is controlled in such a way that the torque and
flux are decoupled.
 The decoupling results in high speed and high torque response.
TORQUE-SPEED CHARACTERISTICS

 The torque speed characteristics are depend upon reactance and resistance
 Large ratio of X and R it becomes non linear.

 It can be seen that for characteristics higher values of rotor resistance and low
reactance the torque speed are linear.
 When control voltage is increased the motor operates at higher speed for same
torque.
ADVANTAGES

 Less maintenance is required as it is a brushless motor.

 AC servomotor is a more stable motor .
 These are the noiseless motor as it doesnot have brush.
 It operates with low power.
 These are low weight devices.
 It offers reliability as well as stability in operation.

DISADVANTAGES

 Efficiency is less.
 Low power output.
APPLICATION

 Major use in robotics.

 They are used in radar system.
 Tracking and guidance system.
 They are also used in machine tools.
 They are used in computers and robotics.
 Sewing machine.
 Portable drilling machine.
 This motor are used in industry for manufacture .
 Also used in aeroplanes.
HOW AC SERVOMOTOR DIFFER FROM DC SERVOMOTOR

AC SERVOMOTOR

Due to absence of commutator maintenance is less.

 Stability problems are less.
 No radio frequency noise.
 More stable

DC SERVOMOTOR

 Frequent maintenance required due to commutator.

 More problems of stability.
 Brushes produce radio frequency noise.
 It is noisy operation
CONCLUSION

Due to the various advantages offered by the AC servomotors, these majorly

finds applications in the instruments that operate on servomechanism, in
position controlling devices, computers. Along with this these also find
applications in tracking systems, machine tools and robotics machinery.
OPINIONs
TEJASWINI PACHBHAI

 Ac servo motor are definitely very useful in the world of robotics.

 They allow us torque and precise movements.
 They are great actuator for imitating things like fingers, hands or leg movements.
 The ease of control the PIC makes them all the move desirable to use in projects ,
however even servos have their limitations.
 There are many different types of servos out there Hi-tec, Futabo , airtronics.
 Some have different wiring and even use different types of PWM input signals.

 Torque-Speed characteristics are the important part of this motor and this two
must be in linear without this motor will not rotate and linearity also help motor to
remain stable and reliable.
 This motor is not possible to be 1 ø because its windings have phase split of 90 deg
that’s why it is a two phase motor.
 This motor has various application and advantages which can easily replace
many motors.

 Talking about the initial torque ac servomotor has high torque due to which it is
used in aeroplane for changing direction.
 India is working on radar system and servomotor is one of the most important
component of radars.
 The price of servomotor can be upto 60000.
 Servomotor is derived from dc motor .

 As there are many advantages of using this motor as it has less maintenance cost ,
more efficiency , more stable as compared to other motors.
 It operates on low power with low noise.
 According to this advantages it is used in robotics , radar system , tracking and
guidance , drilling machine.
 Looking all these advantages and their application I think is the best motor which
can be used in very small parts and which have complicated structure.
 Coming to the robotics the robots need very accurate movement this motor can
give accuracy as compared two other motors.
This motor is very useful in radar system also mostly radar systems are used in
detecting the objects near border for detecting other enemies ships , fighter planes ,
etc
 This motor are used to rotate the radar system in a specific angle which can detect
the objects and the proper action could taken on time.
 Apart from this it is used in many other parts and helpfull in proper work.
 Knowing all this usefull applications of this motor I think this is a very reliable and
efficient motor.
