Latent Heat

The total energy absorbed or released when
a substance changes its physical state
completely at a constant temperature is
called latent heat. The word ‘latent ’ means
hidden.

WHAT IS LATENT HEAT?

Types of Latent Heat

There are 2 types of latent heat:-

• Latent heat of Fusion

• Latent heat of vaporization
RESULT OF LATENT HEAT IN
DIFFERENT CASES
The latent heat of fusion of solid is the
quantity of heat in joules required to
convert 1kg of solid to liquid, without any
change of temperature.
What is Latent
Heat of Fusion?

The latent heat of fusion of ice is

3.34×105 .
What is Latent Heat of Vaporization?
 It is the quantity of heat in joules required to convert 1kg of liquid into gas, without
change in temperature.
 Latent heat of vaporization of water is 22.5×105.
Which one Would You Prefer for Cooling? Ice at 0°C
or water at same temperature?

 Ice at 0° would be more preferred for cooling, as ice has the latent heat
of fusion. And so, it takes all the heat from the surroundings and cools
its surroundings.

• We will be getting more severe burns from steam at 100°C, as heat has more
energy due to latent heat of vaporization.
