INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE UK TOURISM
INDUSTRY
 Road systems, railways, ports, airports etc are the “Arteries” for a successful tourism industry in
the UK
 Globally the UK are in direct competition with the rest of the world as infrastructure continues to
improve world wide
PRE-PANDEMIC:

 Since 2017 air transport infrastructure is one of the most improved components.
 With strong growth in scores across most regions/subregions and economic development levels.
 Much of this performance has come from growing route capacity and the number of carriers operating.
 Perceptions of the quality of air transport infrastructure, while better since 2017, have grown more
slowly
 While most recent airport density figures indicate slightly reduced airport access than before.

SO HOW DOES INFRASTRUCTURE HELP
THE UK TOURISM INDUSTRY? INBOUND:

 In 2018, the UK attracted 38 million international visitors and this number is expected to grow by a quarter by 2025.
Tourism is our calling card to the world, and it has never been more important to ensure that Britain continues to be a
world-class destination competing for global business.
 The UK needs a world-class airport infrastructure, as well as a transport network that supports leisure tourism right across
the UK. Ensuring that key gateways and the wider transport network are welcoming, accessible and provide good value
for money, is essential if we are to see growth from new and emerging markets, as well as maintaining and increasing our
market share with more traditional markets.
 A new third runway will be built at London Heathrow however this runway will only increase capacity to 2030 so we
propose that there is also expansion at Gatwick to maintain London’s position as a world leading transport centre.
 In 2017 UK inbound contributed to the development of the Tourism Sector Deal which asks the Government to build a
world-class transport infrastructure, including a tourist-friendly network across the UK.  This will increase visitor
capacity, particularly to areas outside of London, increase tourism’s GDP contribution, generate more jobs and regenerate
areas throughout Britain.
