History
Thousands of years ago, the Egyptians used wire
to make jewelry.
The use of metal wire in jewelry dates back to
the 2nd Dynasty in Egypt and to the Bronze and
Iron Ages in Europe. In the 20th century, the
works of Alexander Calder and other modern
practitioners developed the medium of wire
sculpture as an art form.

Wire sculpture is a folk art with a history dating

back thousands of years. Wherever the
technology has existed to refine metal and draw
wire, artisans have found ways to adapt the
material creatively. Ancient Egyptians hand-
crafted wire jewelry whose beauty endures to
this day; many examples can be found in
museums.

But the first artist who brought wire sculpture art

to people’s attention was Alexander Calder (1898-
1976 ), Who made a series of wire sculptures in
the 1920s after he’d used wire to experiment
with jewelry making.
First method of wire sculpting is using an object inside a form to support the shape, Second
method is starting with single line to shape the object without any supports, third method is similar

to finish the piece.

artist, he started sculpting from useless
wire & started to shape out animals and
figures out of his imagination and also by
learning the technique of the anatomy to
reach the accuracy of the body shape yet
sticking to the abstract idea, using wood,
aggregate and wires that are useless.
He used simplicity in his pieces as well as
trying to understand the relation of the
volume with the void. using the abstract
method yet having the right structure of
the anatomy by using only one continued
line wire & tying it.
Alexander Calder is an American wire sculpture who is best
known for his innovatie mobiles ( kinetic sculptures powered
by motors or air currents ) that embrace chance in their
aesthetic and his monumental public sculptures

Calder redefined sculpture by introducing the element of

movement, first through performances of his
mechanical Calder's Circus and later with motorized works,
and, finally, with hanging works called "mobiles." In addition
to his abstract mobiles, Calder also created static sculptures,
called "stabiles," as well as paintings, jewelry, theater sets,
and costumes.

Many artists made contour line drawings on paper, but

Calder was the first to use wire to create three-dimensional
line "drawings" of people, animals, and objects. These
"linear sculptures" introduced line into sculpture as an
element unto itself.

Calder shifted from figurative linear sculptures in wire to

abstract forms in motion by creating the first mobiles.
Composed of pivoting lengths of wire counterbalanced with
thin wire lines, the appearance of the entire piece was
randomly arranged and rearranged in space by chance
simply by the air moving the individual parts.

and projects the object’s substance into an unknown
temporal dimension: what has disappeared, or never
existed, lives again in a different time.

Concept: The language of transparency weaves the non-

existent, transforms the denial of matter into a three-
dimensional entity, and reveals the result of a void,
therefore the abstraction of reality and its timeless visual
identity.

corporeality of these firmly material crafts by incorporating a
fourth, elegiac dimension centered on absence.
