INTRODUCTION
• GANDHINAGAR IS THE STATE CAPITAL OF GUJRAT IN WESTERN
INDIA, NAMED AFTER “FATHER OF NATION” MAHATMA GANDHI .
• History of Gandhinagar states that the city was established around 1966. The city
got an identity of its own when the state of Mumbai was divided into two
separate states of Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960. Mumbai since then
became a part of Maharashtra and Gandhinagar became a part of Gujarat as
a state. Gandhinagar emerged as the new capital for the state of Gujarat as the
situation demanded for a new capital city.
ARCHITECTURAL BRIEF OF THE
CITY
• THE NEW CAPITAL CITY WAS PLANNED BY CHIEF ARCHITECT H.K
MEWADA , AND HIS ASSISTANT PRAKASH M APTE . BOTH WORKED AS
TRAINEES UNDER LEGENDARY ARCHITECT LE CORBUSIER IN
CHANDIGARH PROJECT IN THE 1950s, HENCE CAME TO BE KNOWN
AS THE SECOND PLANNED CITY OF INDIA .
• THE SITE IS WELL DRAINED AND HAS GENTLE SLOPE FROM NORTH
EAST TO SOUTH WEST ..
CLIMATE
• GANDHINAGAR HAS TROPICAL WET AND DRY CLIMATE WITH THREE
MAIN SEASONS :SUMMER , MONSOON AND WINTER .
• ( 1970 -1980) of basic amenities such as water supply, drainage, roads, and
electricity besides library building , staff quarters, schools, hospitals etc. were
constructed.
• The town was planned for 1,50,000 to 1,75,000 population and for future
expansion up to 400000.
• In course of time , with the immigration of people, the city grows expanding
outward .thus it leads to concentration of people at periphery of city.
CONCEPT OF THE CITY
• The basic concept of the city inspired from the Chandigarh city.
• Conceptually , the major work areas are provided in the centre and other work
areas distributed along the main road.
• An industrial area is located on the side , away from the wind of the city.
•The capitol complex ,comprising the legislative assembly and the civil
Secretariat, is located in the south-east along the Sabarmati.
• The industrial area is located on the north-western side of the city. A
belt of trees and parkland between the industrial area and the city acts as
insurance against smoke and fumes.
• The layout of the city is based on zoning pattern as in Chandigarh city, i.e.
different zones of Residential, Commercial & Industrial areas to create healthy
environment in the city.
• With the laying of zoning pattern, neighborhood planning in sectors are done to
fulfill the all routine needs of occupants

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
• It has a highly ordered street grid - comprising blocks that are divided by two
types of streets.
• Gandhinagar has \letter roads\ (CH, CHH ,KH) and \number roads\ (1,2,3).
• The letter roads run parallel across the city, perpendicular to the number
roads.
• The number & letter roads intersect each other forming a grid; each block or
square in the grid is given a sector number.
• All streets cross every kilometre, and at every crossing traffic circles decrease the
speed of traffic.
