 How are innovation networks set up, operated, sustained?

1. Find initiators: look for people in the company who enjoy building and
maintaining networks
2. Start small: send an innovation workshop invitation to who potential
interested in ideas and innovation → trigger participants to be enthusiastic
about an innovation network.
3. Inform the innovation network regularly: initiate a biweekly or monthly
newsletter in which describe three to four important trends for the company
or industry
4. Involve members regularly: Ask questions, ask for feedback
5. Expand the innovation network step by step: organize idea competitions on
various topics → Encourage employees to suggest ideas
 Challenges of network innovation and recommendation
1. At organizational level: be difficult to get network project started due to highly regulated or few
established potential partners within the same sector, …

→ Recommendation: conduct workshop to find, attract the potential partners.

2. At project level: lack of experience with the network innovation

3. At actor level: problem related to share of knowledge, relationships within teams, expectation
management of team members and process due to confront with different company cultures

⇒ Recommendation: together research and define the framework for the different stages of
innovation to realize fair, dynamic and not-frustrating relationship.
Types of innovation network

Dimensions characterizing innovation networks and clusters include:

● Geographical scope. Networks may be national, international or global.

(Napas, World Bank, WHO,...)
● Actors involved. Innovation networks and clusters may involve only firms (Ex:
Technological co-operation between firms), or multiple types of actors, such as
firms, universities (Ex: R&D collaboration of universities and firms).
● Issues of co-operation. Innovation networks and clusters can spur co-
operation on issues as diverse as training, technological development, product
design, marketing, export and distribution.
Types of innovation network
Innovation networks and clusters may take multiple forms, including the following:
● Formal networks. Based on contractual relationships among organizations. Ex: strategic
alliances, buyer-supplier contracts and joint ventures.
● Informal networks. Rely on connections between people, resulting. Ex: from employee
mobility and social networks.
● Industry networks. Connect actors that operate in the same industry. Ex: business
associations of specific industries
● Production chain networks. These are networks based on actors involved in a common
production chain.
● Global networks. These formal or informal networks span the world. Ex: LinkedIn
● University-firm networks Link universities and businesses.
● Geographical clusters. Geographic concentration of firms, higher education and research
institutions, and other public and private entities that facilitate collaboration on complementary
economic activities.
Types of innovation network - 4 zones
Zone 1: potential connects. Example: On motorbike industry, Honda may want to cooperate
with the lubricating oil companies. There can be Castrol, Total, … but finally the collaboration
between Honda and Idemitsu was established since 2014

Zone 2: new network connection. Example: A company want to expand to other countries, it
want to find the supplier for local materials, transportation partner,...

Zone 3: partners are easily to find but hard to cooperate. Example: Company require special
quality of materials for production such as pharmaceutical company, Airplane manufacturer,...

Zone 4: partners that are hard to find or hard to cooperate with. Example: organization in
special industries such as weapon distributors, military equipment,...
