Passive voice

What is passive voice?


Active voice and passive voice have some very basic
differences. If in the active sentence the subject of the
sentence (person) does the job, while in the passive
sentence the subject is not the actor of the job but the
object.

Active : S + Verb/Modal+ O

Passive: S + Verb/Modal+ O
The passive voice in Indonesian can be easily formed
by simply adding a prefix in front of the verb. Example:
 Active: adik menendang bola.
 Passive: bola ditendang adik.

But in English there is a slightly different way to convert


active voice to passive voice. We have to change some
form of the verb and add a to be in front of it. Example :
 Active : My brother kicks the ball.
Passive : The ball is kicked by My brother.
When We Use
passive voice?
A. Passive voice is used if we just want to focus
on events not on who did it.

Active : The man is kicking the ball now.


Passive: The ball is being kicked now. /
The ball is being kicked by the man
now.
B. Passive voice is used to avoid a
confusing subject (someone, somebody)

Active : Someone hit the mirror last night.


Passive: The mirror was hit last night. /
The mirror was hit by someone
last night.
Note:
In English there are several verbs that can
has 2 objects, such as : Teach, pay, give, ask, tell, show, offer.

Active : Mr. Aldo teaches me Math.


Passive : I am tough Math by Mr. Aldo. /
Math is tough by Mr. Aldo to me.
Types of passive voice.
In general, the passive voice pattern can be
divided into 4, namely:
 Present passive voice,
 Past passive voice,
 Future passive voice, dan
 Modal auxiliary passive voice
Present passive voice.
Simple present tense

Active : Budi writes a letter.


(S + V1(s/es) +O)
Passive : A letter is written by Budi.
(S + am/is/are + V3)
Past passive voice
Simple past
Active : I ate fried rice yesterday.
(S + V2 + O)
Passive : Fried rice was eaten by me yesterday.
(S + was/were + V3)
Future Passive Voice
Simple future
Active : Maggie will wash the car.
(S + will + V1 + O)
Passive : the car will be washed by Maggie.
(S + will + be + V3)
Modal auxiliary Passive Voice

Modal auxiliary terdiri dari Can-Could, May-Might,


Will- Would, Shall-Should, Must dan Ought to.
Active : The woman can answer the question
(S + modals + V1+ O)
Passive : The question can be answered by the woman.
(S + Modal + be + V3)
