 What is a Thesis Statement
The thesis statement is a sentence that expresses the main idea of a
research paper or essay. A thesis statement tells the reader what the paper
is about and helps guide the writer and keep his arguments or ideas
focused. It is a fact that the writer wants to prove or explain.

A strong thesis statement usually contains an element of uncertainty,

risk or challenge. This means that your thesis should offer a debatable
claim that you can prove or disprove in your essay. The claim should be
debatable enough to let your readers agree or disagree with you. Also,
you will have to gather evidence in order for you to back up your thesis
statement.

3. A good thesis is not a statement of absolute fact.

FACT: NOT A THESIS

• Jane Austin is the author of Pride and Prejudice.
• The capital of Philippines is Manila.
4. A good thesis is restricted. It deals with bite-size issues that narrow down big ideas into more specific ones.

POOR: The world is in a terrible mess.

BETTER: Trade barriers contribute to international tensions.

5. A good thesis is unified. The thesis expresses one major idea about its subject.

POOR:
Detective stories are not a high form of literature, but people
have always been fascinated by them, and many fine writers have experimented with them.

BETTER:
Detective stories appeal to the basic human desire for thrills.

6. A good thesis is specific.

POOR:
The Mobile Science Museum is impressive.

BETTER:
