Linear Functions
● A  linear function usually takes the form,

where and are constants.

 This is in function notation and should be read simply
as “f of x” or “a function of x into y”.
 Note that , and linear function also takes the form,
.

There are two computer shops that John and Roy are
choosing from – the RCA Net Café and the RMG Internet
Hub. At RCA Net Café, the flat rate is Php40 for the first
hour and Php20 for each succeeding hour. On the other
hand RMG Internet Hub offers rental fee for Php30 for the
first hour and Php25 for each succeeding hour.

Let x = number of rental hours and y = total amount to
be paid.
For RCA Net Café that charges Php40 for the first hour
and Php20 for each succeeding hour, we have the table of
values below.

Slope of a line
● The

slope of a line is defined as the ratio of the
change in values to the change in the values,
that is, if we have any two points and , the slope
is given by,

Linear Function in Equation
Form
●

 This form is referred to as the slope-intercept form

where is the slope of the line and represents the
-intercept of the linear function.
 We also have the standard form of a linear function,
which is written in the form

where and are integers, and
