4 THE LUNGS AND BREATHING

• These are our lungs.
We use our lungs for breathing, we need to breathe to stay alive. We breathe in and breath
out.
• The lungs are found in the chest. They are protected by the ribs, as shown in the first slide.
The lungs are like stretchy sponges that fill up with air
• Now let’s talk about how we breathe in and out.
INSIDE THE LUNGS
LUNG
DISEASES
ASTHMA
• Asthma is a long-term disease of the lungs. It causes your airways to get inflamed and
narrow, and it makes it hard to breathe. Severe asthma can cause trouble talking or being
active. It is also known as chronic respiratory disease.
ASTHMA SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
ARE:
• Shortness of breath.
• Chest tightness or pain.
• Wheezing when exhaling, which is a common sign of asthma in children.
• Trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing.
• Coughing or wheezing attacks that are worsened by a respiratory virus, such as a cold or the
flu.
LUNG CANCER
• Lung cancer is cancer that forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells that line the air
passages. It is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. There are two main
types: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. These two types grow
differently and are treated differently.
PNEUMONIA(LUNGS
INFECTION)
• Pneumonia is an infection that inflames your lungs' air sacs (alveoli). The air sacs may fill
up with fluid or pus, causing symptoms such as a cough, fever, chills, and trouble breathing.
SYMPTOMS OF PNEUMONIA
• Cough, which may produce greenish, yellow or even bloody mucus.
• Fever, sweating and shaking chills.
• Shortness of breath.
• Rapid, shallow breathing.
• Sharp or stabbing chest pain that gets worse when you breathe deeply or cough.
• Loss of appetite, low energy, and fatigue.
