1.Description of the project

Owner: Ato Tilahun Abebe.

Consultant: MTT consulting architect and engineers.
Contractor: Tilahun Abebe General Contractor.
Designer: MTT Consulting Architects and Engineers
Project: 3B+G+15+Mixed Use head Office Building
Project.
Location: Addis Abeba,Welo sefer
It is two Years project with total cost of 215,583,772
ETB.

2. Activities carried on during the internship

Office work
 Take off sheet preparation
 Construction drawing
 Bar schedule

Site work
 Super structure
 Column
 Stair
 Slab and beam
Take off sheet preparation

Takeoff sheet is the collection of works and their

quantity. It uses to know the quantity of any work
item. It helps to make the cost of every single or
total work on properly dimension paper.
Bar schedule
Bar schedule: is a tabular format that is specially used for
estimating the quantity of reinforcement bars required for
the given project.
It is used to record re-bar shape, dimension, number,
position are taken from structural details. It helps us to
prepare the work order with minimum wastage and to
know the number of 12m re-bar (berga).
Super structure works

Column
Column is a vertical structural part of the building which is primarily
constructed to support beams. It transfers loads from beams and
columns to column and finally to the foundation.
Procedures to construct the column
 Reinforcement bars are placed
 Spacers are tied with longitudinal bars
 Formwork surrounding bars are constructed
 Alignment of the column is kept
 Concrete is poured in to the formwork
Fig 2: Column construction
Stair
Stairs are the most useful vertical movement devices in
buildings. During working process, stair has its own
formwork and reinforcement bar arrangements.
Process used for the construction of staircase
 Form work along the length of the riser constructed
 Reinforcement bars are placed
 Spacers are used with bars
 Verticality of the riser checked by plumb bob
 Pouring of concrete
 Finally removing of formwork
Fig 3:- Stair
Beam and Slab

Beam:- is a horizontal structural element that is capable

of withstanding load primarily by resisting bending.

Fig:- Beam construction

Slab:- is a common structural element of
modern buildings consisting of a flat,
horizontal surface made of cast concrete. Slabs
are mostly square or horizontal in shape.

Fig: Slab construction

Formwork
Formwork is used to keep the shape of a given structural
element and to support until it reaches the required
strength. There are different types of formwork used on
the site and for each elements has its own stripping time.

 For column:- from 14-17 hours because it is vertical

structure.
 For slab and beams:- in 21 days since it is horizontal
structure.
Scaffolding

Scaffolding is temporary structure used on the outside of building to

easily move. It is platform constructed for reaching heights above arms
reach for the purpose of building construction, maintenance and repair.

3.Challenges I have been facing during performing my work task

These includes:-
 Unfamiliarity with the site language
 The contradict between structural drawing and practical work
 Communication problem at the staff and site the environment
was new for me.
 Calculation of take-off sheet was difficult as we have not taken
the course earlier.
 There was no substructure work
4.Measures I have taken to overcome
the challenges
 By discussing (asking) the site workers.
 When time passed I have made smooth relationships with
the employers.
 Try to ask my friends how to make takeoff sheet and bar
schedule.
 Try to read different material that related with course that I
have not learnt before the internship.
6.Conclusion

The internship program has enabled me to be familiar with

how real world looks like in the field of construction.
I have dealt with different techniques to construct a building
and I am very well aware of what is done in the office of the
construction company.
The field practice has played a crucial role in equipping us
with the practical knowledge of understanding and
implementing field exercises in construction industry.
Recommendations
For my hosting company
 For each worker and intern student there should have safety shoes, helmet
and other healthy staff.
 They should give priority for the intern student in order to accept questions
and able to assign a person for intern student to ask unclear things.
 They should minimize wastage and reuse them.
 They have to provide first aid for the workers and intern student.

For the university

 Quantity surveying and construction scheduling courses should be given
before the internship program.
