BRIEF title style OF THE DISTRICT
BACKGROUND
• During the British Raj, Tiruchirappalli was
known as Trichinopoly, and was a district of
the Madras Presidency; it was renamed
upon India’s declaration of independence in
1947.
• Tiruchirappalli District is located centrally in
Tamil Nadu between the North Latitude 10°
to 11°-30'and the East Longitude 77°-45' to
78°-50'2. The district has a total area of
4,403.83 Square Kilometres
• Grand Anicut or Kallanai, KarikalaCholan,
an early Chola King, constructed the grand
Anicut. It is situated on the northern bank of
Cauvery about 16 km east of Tiruchirappalli
town and mainly used for irrigation
purpose.
