Bon Odori

Historical Background and Cultural


Importance
The Odori dance originated from Japan. It is a type of folk dance
performed in the Obon Festival. The festival is celebrated in different
regions in Japan.It begins in mid-august and it lasts for two days. It
is celebrated to welcome the spirits of the dead. The participants
dance till dusk to dawn.The dance was established 220 years ago.
Attire
Women wear cotton robes called yukata, while men wear happi
basically a shorter yukata over shorts or pants. Men dance in split-
toed rubber-soled socks called tabi and women wear sandals called
geta.
Music
The instruments used in the dance are shamisen,bamboo flute and
taiko drum.The music is very upbeat and harmonious.The
rhythmic patterns of the music are very delightful.
Dance
When they perform the dance they move very freely. They use
their hands for the majority of dance,and they also have spins.
People enjoy the dance because the movements are very lively and
smooth.
