DE IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE VISUAL DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN TWO SAMPLES

 DE = 0.00 Perfect Match

 DE = 0.3-0.5 Just Visible Difference
 DE = 0.7-1.1 Acceptable Difference
 DE > 1.5 Bad Match

DE*ab = [DE*) 2 + (DC*) 2 + (DH*) 2 ] 1/2

Metamerism

A PAIR OF SAMPLES MAY APPEAR TO BE A GOOD MATCH UNDER ONE SET OF CONDITIONS
BUT FAIL TO MATCH UNDER ANOTHER SET OF CONDITIONS

A phenomenon that occurs when colors change when viewed in different light sources.

Metamerism

Several factors compound this problem including:

 Colorant class
 Coloration processes
 Color-matching between manufacturers
 Eyes, humidity, temperature

The colors that are most likely to have metameric problems include taupe, mauve, lilac,
tan, celadon, gray/blues, and grays.

Metamerism

Make every effort to use three or less colorants in a formula as this will also help to lessen
the chances of metamerism.
