Vectors
U1 – Geometric Vectors

3
Vectors and Scalars
Vector - A quantity that has both magnitude
and direction.
Scalar – A quantity that describes magnitude
or size only (with or without units). It does not
include direction.

4
Classify the following as Vector (V), Scalar
(S) or Neither (N)
A van traveling at 20 km/h to the west
A plane travelling 360mi/h
The root of 5
Walking 2km to school going south
I love Barney

6
Vector Representations
Geometric Vector - Representation of a vector using
an arrow diagram.
Algebraically: AB where A is the start and B is the
end or v

7
Characteristics
Magnitude – the size of a vector designated using
absolute brackets. |AB|=
Direction – True or Quadrant bearing

8
Direction
True bearing – Compass measurement from
North in clockwise direction. (left diagram)
Quadrant bearing – Measurement between 0⁰
and 90⁰ east or west of the North-South line.

9
Types of vectors
Parallel/Collinear Vectors – Same or opposite
direction (not necessarily same
magnitude).

Equal Vectors – Same direction and

magnitude.

Opposite Vectors – Same magnitude

but opposite direction.

10
Special Vectors
Unit vectors – i and j have magnitude 1 and a true
bearing of 0⁰ and 90⁰, respectively.
Zero Vector denoted 0 has zero magnitude and
undefined direction.

11
Convert the following
True Bearings Quadrant Bearings
130⁰ _____
330 ⁰ _____
_____ N20⁰W
_____ S30⁰E

13
True or False
If two vectors are collinear then they are parallel.
If two vectors are collinear they must have the same
magnitude.
If |AB|=2 and |v|=2, then AB and v are equal vectors.
The opposite vector of AB is BA or –AB.
|i|=1 with a true bearing of 90⁰
0 has a bearing of 0⁰ and |0|=0
The weight of an object is an example of a scalar.
