ABSTRACT

 Crossinfections are acquired from hospitals

through door handles
 Pathogens can be spread from their source to a
new host directly or indirectly, in the air or by
vectors
 This design helps to eliminate transmission of
infections.
BACKGROUND OF STUDY

 The increase in transmission of infections within

health facilities is a serious problem, increasing
both in severity and importance. As a result,
bacterial antibiotic resistance also rises making
treatment and infection control difficult.
Therefore, it is important to find means of
limiting or even preventing the transmission of
pathogens within medical facilities. Surfaces in
patients’ surroundings, including the door knob or
handle, are a relevant transmission route for
viruses and microorganisms
PROBLEM STATEMENT

 According to World Health Organization, cross-

infections are the most difficult to treat as a
result of antimicrobial resistance. Studies have
shown that a great number of nosocomial
pathogens are spread through cross contamination
that is contact with hospital staff, the hospital
environment, contaminated equipment and
instruments such as needles. It is absurd that
many patients go to seek medical attention in
hospitals and other health centres, only to leave
with newer infections.
OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

To test the efficacy of the mechanical hand-free door system within
medical facilities.
To carry out a functionality test, that is, checking whether the system

carries out its intended purpose.
To carry out a performance test to ascertain how well the system

behaves.
To carry out a user acceptability test to see whether the target users

will desire/prefer the foot-operated door system to traditional doors
with latches.
To carry out a load test to ascertain the minimum force required to

open the door using this system.
JUSTFICATION OF STUDY

 To prevent spread of infectious viruses and diseases like

covid-19.
 It offers the benefits of convenience and durability.
 Itreduces the risk of people getting hit by closing hinged
doors or having fingers caught between a door and its frame.
 It reduces the stress levels that hinged doors must withstand
METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION

 Questionnaire
 Interviews
 Observation
 Brainstorming
 photography
Criteria for success

 Criteria for success refers to the factors that the

team must consider in order to have the best
design. It brings out the characteristics and
features that the design will have as well as the
limits in which the team must operate.
