Physical Features:

I. The Western Cordilleras,

II. The Central Lowlands/ Great Plains of North America,

III. The Eastern Highlands/ Appalachians,

IV. Canadian Shield.

I. The Western Cordilleras (ropes or cords in Spanish):

1. It consists of young fold mountains.

2. It is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire/ Circum-Pacific Belt/ Fiery Ring of the Pacific.

3. It brings in orographic/ relief rainfall to the western slopes of the mountains.

4. It is the source of several rivers- Mackenzie, Fraser, Colorado, Rio Grande, Missouri etc.

I. The Western Cordilleras: It is further sub-divided into:

a) The Eastern Chain: Includes the Rocky Mountain with its highest peak Mt Elbert. It acts as a water-
divide for the rivers flowing into the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

b) The Central Chain: It includes the Cascade Range and the Sierra Nevada.

c) The Pacific Coast Range: It includes the following:

i. Mountain ranges-Alaskan Range, Coast Range, Sierra Madre,

ii. Plateaus- the Columbia Plateau, the Colorado Plateau and the Mexican Plateau,

iii. Rivers- River Colorado, River Snake,

iv. Lakes- Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA).

v. The famous Grand Canyon on the River Colorado is located


here.

II. The Central Lowlands/ Great Plains of North America:


1. It extends from the Arctic shores and Hudson Bay (North) to the Gulf of Mexico (South).

2. It is bordered by the Western Cordilleras to the west and the Eastern Highlands to the east.

3. It is drained by the Rivers Mississippi and its tributaries- River Missouri, River Ohio etc.

III. The Eastern Highlands/ Appalachians:

4. It is an old fold mountain.

5. Its highest peak is Mt Mitchell.

6. It is the source of River Tennessee, River Ohio and River Kentucky.

7. On its eastern slope is the *piedmont plateau (flanked by mountain on one side and by a plain or a
sea on the other).

IV. Canadian Shield:

1. It is a plateau consisting of old, hard volcanic rocks.

2. It has been reduced to a peneplain (a extensive landmass which has undergone erosion with time
and has been reduced to almost a plain).

3. The Great Lakes of North America- L. Superior, L. Michigan, L. Huron, L. Erie, and L. Ontario are
located here.

4. The famous Niagara Falls is located between L. Erie and L. Ontario.

5. Other lakes are L. Manitoba, L. Winnipeg, L. Reindeer, L. Athabasca,


L Great Slave, L. Great Bear.

6. It is famous for its mineral deposits- iron-ore.
