INBRED LINE:

DEVELOPMENT,EVALUATION
AND THEIR MAINTENANCE
METHODS

There are two methods of developing inbred lines

 Selfing of heterozygous populations(pedigree
method, bulk method, SSD method, backcross
method)
 Doubling of haploids
DEVELOPMENT OF INBRED LINES
Pedigree method is generally practiced in the development of
inbreds
FIRST YEAR
A number of plants with desirable phenotypes are selected from
source populationand self pollinated
The selected plants should be vigorous and free from diseases
They may be selected on the bais of their GCA esrtimates
SECOND YEAR
About 30-40 plants are space planted from the selfed seed from
each of the selected plants
THIRD TO SIXTH YEARS
Process of second year is repeated
As the number of generation of self pollination increases,
individual plant progenies would ecome more and more
homozygous

SEVENTH YEAR
At this stage, individual plant progenies would be almost
homozygous
Selfing may be discontinued and inbreds may be maintained by
sib pollination
PRODUCTION OF DOUBLED
HAPLOIDS
An individual with the doubled chromosome number of the
haploid
The technique of doubled haploids may be used to produce
complete homozygous diploid lines In just 1year by doubling the
chromosome complement of haploid cells
There are three steps involved in the production of doubled
haploids
 Haploid production
Haploid identification
Genome doubling
• The production of doubled haploids leads to homozygosity
in a single generation alter recombination of selected
parents
• Selection is more efficient for oligogenic or polygenic trairs
in DHs because the genes are fixed in a homozygous
background,limiting dominance genetic variation and
segregation
• The DH method prevents losses of valuable genetic
variation better than the conventional selection method
MAINTAINENCE
• Inbred lines can be maintained by self pollination, sib-pollination,
or a Combination of the two procedures (hand pollination).
• Some breeders prefer 'sibbing" because it maintains vigour.
"Selfing" is used to stabilize Inbred lines if a change in breeding
behavior is noticed.
• Some parental material is preferably maintained by alternate selfing
and sibbing from one Generation to other
• It is rather important to ensure that the crop is well isolated, with
the requirement varying from crop to crop and depending upon the
nature of the material to be protected by isolation, the nature of the
contaminant, and the direction of the prevailing wind
• The isolation can be achieved either by distance or by time
(maize). The inbred line may be Composited for bulk
planting in the next season.
• Maintenance of genetic purity in inbred lines through hand
pollination and adequate isolation Alone is not enough to
achieve perfection.
• The isolated fields must be critically rogued for off types
and other impure types prior to the Shedding of pollen
IMPROVING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
INBRED LINES
Various schemes have been suggested to improve the
existing inbred in respect of
1. Productivity of inbreds
2. Disease and insect resistance
3. Combining ability of inbreds to increase yielding
ability of hybrids
The following methods are used
A) Pedigree selection
