CHARLES CORREA
• Charles Correa was born on 1st September 1930 into a
middle cast catholic family .
• Credited for the creation of modern architecture in post
independent India.
• He was celebrated for his sensitivity to the needs of
urban poor and the his use of traditional methods and
materials.
• He was awarded Padma shri in 1972, and the second
highest civilian honor the Padma Vibhushan by the
government of Indian in the year 2006.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF CHARLES
CORREA
 Incremental housing : He believed in improving the slums into urban districts gradually rather
than demolishing and re-building.
 Identity : He focused on preserving the architectural identity may it be the form or using a
specific architectural style.
 Pluralism : He designed buildings that were used by a wide rang of people irrespective of their
cast, religion etc.
 Income generation : Each space were design based on their occupation which was a source of
income .
 Local vernacular : buildings which are responsive to the climate of the place and the needs of
people.
 Open to sky : He believed that the sky is a blessing and it makes you closes to the gods and
heavens, which is reflected in his designs with open to sky concept.

CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT

 Wadi usually has a dry and a healthy climate, characterized by a


monsoon season in the summer.
 Average temperature between 26 and 30 degree.
 Average rainfall of 750mm per year.
CONTEXT
 In 1984, the Associated cement company of
India commissioned two types of housing
should be incorporated into a existing
company township for the employees of the
company.
 The units are designed along the periphery of
the site rather like a necklace.
 In both cases there are progression from the
exterior to the interior.

CORREAS ANALYSIS

 Charles Correa has design several houses with a variety of generation methods. The forms
are mostly basic and the generation can be grouped as linear generation, cluster and chain
like generations.

 Consists of 368 flats.


 Each flat has a area of 48sqm.
 Each are 3 storey unit.
 These 3 structures are arranged in a highly formal manner to form a series of
interconnected units, courtyards and gardens.
 The units decrease in the upper level to form terrace that is facing the central space.

 They are ventilated by internal patio, arranged in tightly knit clusters.
 Each unit has a barsati ( i.e. rainy season ) room on the terrace level.

rotation and mirror operations.
The generation is done by rotation, rational
symmetry and mirror operations.
The site generation is done by repetition and
rotation of the generated groups.
