 Prisms
Cavalieri’s Theorem
This principles states that, ”if two solids of the same height
are such that their corresponding sections at any level
have the same areas, then they have the same volume”.
Decks of cards and stacks of CDs or pennies provide
examples of equal volume
Prisms

A prism is a polyhedron of which two faces are equal polygons

in parallel planes, and the other faces are parallelograms.
Properties

1. The bases are the equal polygons; the lateral area is

the sum of the areas of the remaining faces.
2. The intersection of the lateral faces are called the
lateral edges. These lateral edges are equal and
parallel.
3. The section of a prism made by parallel planes cutting
all lateral edges are equal polygons.
4. The altitude of the prism is the perpendicular distance
between the planes of its bases.
5. A right section of a prism is a section perpendicular to
the lateral edges.
FORMULAS

“The lateral area of a prism is equal to the product of a

lateral edge and the perimeter of the right section.

Lateral area = lateral edge x perimeter of right section

S = e*pk
FORMULAS
“The Volume of a prism is equal either to the product of a
base and the altitude, or to the product of a right section
and a lateral edge.

Volume = base x altitude

V = Bh

Volume = right section x lateral edge

V = K*e
Problems

1. A lead pencil whose ends are regular hexagons was cut from
a cylindrical piece of wood, with the least waste. If the original
piece was 8 in. long and ½ in. in diameter, Find the volume of
the pencil.
2. The bases of a triangular right prism are 12 cm apart. Find the
volume and the total surface area of the prism if one side of the
equilateral triangular base measures 6 cm.
3. A right prism has a square base and a lateral edge which
measures 10 cm. Find the volume of the solid if the lateral area is
120 cm2.
