Computer Performance

► In evaluating processor
hardware and setting
requirements for new systems,
per-formance is one of the key
parameters to consider, along
with cost, size, security, reliabil
and, in some cases, power
consumption

Clock speed
Clock speed

- CPU processing speed is measured in Hertz (Hz)

- CPU processing speed is a measure of the number of spin cycles a
CPU can perform per second
Two concepts related to clock
pulses:
• Clock cycle (Clock cycle/ clock
tick/ cycle time).

• Clock frequency (Clock rate/

Clock speed).

. Then we can calculate an overall CPI as follows:

  𝑛

∑ ( 𝐶𝑃 𝐼 𝑖 × 𝐼 𝑖 )
𝑖=1
𝐶𝑃𝐼 =
𝐼𝑐
We can rewrite the preceding
equation as
1

𝑇 =𝐼 𝑐 ×𝐶𝑃𝐼 × 𝑡

2

𝑇 =𝐼 𝑐 × ¿
We can express the MIPS rate in terms of the
clock rate and CPI as follows:
  𝐼𝑐 𝑓
𝑀𝐼𝑃𝑆 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 = 6
= 6
1 𝑇 × 10 𝐶𝑃𝐼 × 10

Floating-point performance is expressed as millions of floating-

point operations per second (MFLOPS), defined as follows:

2 Number of executed floating - point operations in a program

6
MFLOPS rate = Execution time * 10
