Sex and Gender:
What they are, how they differ?

The term sex and gender are often interchanged;

to understand the problem of gender subordination, the
distinct meanings of these two concepts must be
clarified.
Sex - refers to the biological differences
between males and females, such as the
genitalia, genetic differences, secondary
sex characteristics

Gender - refers to the socially constructed
characteristics of women and men, such as norms,
roles and relationship of and between groups of
women and men. It varies from society to society
and can be changed

Gender Stereotyping
(Pagkakahon)
The confusion between sex and gender has resulted to
gender stereotyping. It is the practice of ascribing
to an individual woman or man specific attributes,
characteristics, or roles by reason only of her/his
membership in the social group of women or men.

The assumption behind stereotyping is that the ascribed

attributes of men apply to all men and that of women
apply to all women in a given society.

Boys are strong. Girls are graceful.

about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of
sexuality.
CSE is part of the global Sustainable Development Goals. It
has connection on SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing, SDG 4
(Quality Education), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Kasama sa nararanasan ng nagdadalaga ay
ang buwanang dalaw o mas kilala sa tawag
na…

Regla.
Kwentong
• Maraming kababaihan ang
dumadaan sa mga pagsubok at
nawawalan ng karapatang
mapangalagaan ang sarili tuwing
may regla
• Diskriminasyon, maling
paniniwala, limitadong
impormasyon, kahirapan at
kakulangan sa mga serbiyo at
pasiladad ay mga dahilan ng
problemang ito
• Nagiging hadlang ito sa
pagkilos sa tahanan at
eskwelahan; at pakikilahok sa
mga gawain pangkomunidad
• May epekto ang pagreregla
sa batang babae at batang lalaki
- pisikal, sikolohikal o sosyal.
• Para sa mga batang babae,
maaaring magkaroon ng
impeksyon dahil sa hindi tamang
paraan sa pag-aalaga ng sarili
• Hindi sila makapasok o nawawalan
ng atensyon sa pag-aaral dahil sa
kawalan ng sanitasyon, pasilidad at
kagamitang pangregla
• Panunukso at pambubully
dahil sa regla ay nagdudulot ng
takot, pagkahiya at stress
• Kakulangan sa impormasyon
tungkol sa regla at reproductive
health ay dahilan ng maagang
pagbubuntis
• Napag-iiwanan ang mga batang
lalaki sa talakayan tungkol sa regla
• Kadalasan kulang o maling
impormasyon ang natutunan
• Mahalagang kasama ang mga lalaki
sa talakayan. Mauunawaan nila
ang pinagdadaan ng mga
kababaihan; matutunan ang
pagrespeto sa kapwa; tamang
paraan kung paano pag-usapan
ang mga sensitibong bagay
• Kailangan ng mga bata ang
wastong impormasyon tungkol
sa pagreregla mula sa pamilya at
pinagkakatiwalaang tao
• Ituro ang mga pag-uugaling
pang-WASH (e.g. paghuhugas ng
kamay gamit ang malinis na tubig
at sabon, paggamit ng malinis at
ligtas na palikuran, etc.)
• Itama ang mga sabi-sabi at
maling paniniwala tungkol sa
regla
• Magsilbing tagapagpadaloy sa
pag-aaral gamit ang mga MHM
modules. Magbahagi ng mga
karanasan tungkol dito
• #MeronAko Project ay kampanya
tungkol sa Menstrual Hygiene
Management ng DepEd, UNICEF
Philippines at CHSI. Inilunsand noong
2018 sa mga piling paaralan sa
Northern Samar
• Sa taong 2021, makakasama na ang
lahat ng public elementary school sa
Division of Northern Samar

MHM as Driver of WASH in Schools (WinS)

• MHM is a key component of WASH in

Schools under the National WinS Policy (DO
10, s. 2016)
• WinS Policy provides a gender–
responsive WinS program as a whole
• MHM indicator – access to sanitary pad
– in DepEd Enhanced Basic Education
Information System (E-BEIS)
• MHM as one of five critical indicators in WinS
Three Star Approach (water, sanitation,
hygiene, deworming & health education)
What is Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)?

Women and adolescent girls…

• Use clean menstrual management materials to absorb or collect

menstrual blood
• Can change in privacy as often as necessary for the duration of a
menstrual period, using soap and water for washing the body
• Have access to safe and convenient facilities to dispose of used
menstrual management materials
• Understand the basic facts linked to the menstrual cycle and how to
manage it with dignity and without discomfort or fear
Ideal Health Belief System

Knows that menstruation is a normal &

important milestone of fertility.
Feels ready to manage personal menstrual
hygiene.
Feels safe & confident to consult
teacher/nurse about menstruation.
Takes a bath & observes proper hygiene.
Talks to teacher/nurse/guidance
officer about menstruation.
Seeks accurate medical advice to manage
menstrual pain.
How does COVID-19 affect MHM?

The pandemic
further aggravates
current challenges
in menstrual health
and hygiene.
Averting (another) Emergency within Emergency

• Periods do not stop for pandemics.

• Puberty does not stop for pandemics.
• Pandemic further aggravates challenges in MHM.
• School closure: Lost opportunity to reach and empower girls and
boys
• Home schooling: opportunity to engage parents/adults in MHM/CSE
• Averting MHM learning loss – more girls and boys with optimal life
chances
