Major Project-I: Seminar 1

Major Area 2
Preventing Progressive Collapse:
 The spread of an initial local failure from element to element, resulting in the
collapse of an entire structure or a disproportionately large part of it.
 Progressive collapse is defined as an extent of damage/collapse that is
disproportionate to the magnitude of the initiating event. It focuses on the relative
consequences of the collapse rather than the manner in which it occurs.
 On April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, 168
fatalities were due to the partial collapse of the structure and not to direct blast
effects.
 Objective: 3
 To study the behavior of progressive collapse and to learn the potential to minimize the
risk in new and existing facilities

 Scope:

 Buildings of 3+ stories are subjected to greater risk of progressive collapse

 Therefore it should be designed to sustain local damage with the structural system
remaining stable as a whole

 And also not being damaged to an extent disproportionate to the original local damage

 Design of buildings to resist progressive collapse: DoD USA

 General Services Administration

Major Area 4
Performance based design for important structures:

 Designer clarifies the actual performance demand, determines the target

performance and confirms that the results of deign satisfy the target
 Damage control, a critical design parameter
 Airports, hospitals, power generating stations and other important structures
 Design by FEMA 356 Seismic rehabilitation of buildings: Immediate Occupancy, Life
Safety, Collapse Prevention
Other Areas of Interest 5
 Blast resistant structures
 Demolition of buildings: Techniques & patterns
 Investigation of completely collapsed structures
 Repair/retrofitting of buildings, bridges, various structures
 Risk/damage assessment (Documentation)
 Rehabilitation/Restoration of Heritage structures (Documentation)
 Comparison of various asymmetries in real buildings (Documentation)
 Comparison of Dispute Resolution techniques for different cases
 Construction Disputes & Arbitration
