INTRODUCTION
● The human brain is the most valuable part of human but the life span
of every human being is limited. If a person dies, his/her knowledge
becomes void.
● So, this is why IBM and EPFL developed a virtual brain known as the
"blue brain" which acts exactly like the human brain.
● The main aim of this project was to use biologically-detailed digital
reconstructions and simulations of the mammalian brain to figure out
what the basic principles of brain structure and function are.
● Then the information is stored virtually through an artificial brain.
VIRTUAL BRAIN
● What is a Virtual Brain?
A virtual brain is an artificial brain that can think like a natural
brain, take decisions based on past experience, and respond just
like how a natural brain can.

● Why do we need Virtual Brain?

 The main objective behind this project is to establish a
connection between virtual and natural brain..
 Knowledge, memories, and feelings can all be saved in an
artificial brain and used until they are erased.
● How is it possible?
Knowledge, memories
and feelings can be
downloaded to an
artificial brain by
applying high-level
computational
algorithms using
supercomputers with
large storage facilities.
WORKING OF NATURAL BRAIN
● Sensory input : It receives input such as sound, image etc.
through sensory cells.

● Interpretation : It interprets the received input by the brain and

defines the states of neurons in the brain.

● Motor output : It receives electrical responses from the brain

and performs the respective action needed.
BLUE BRAIN TECHNOLOGY
● The project began on May 2005 by a Swiss research team called
EPFL(École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in Switzerland.
● The Blue Brain uses a supercomputer created by IBM called
"BLUE GENE" to store the data , which runs under a software
named "NEURON"
● "NEURON" is an environment that models the network of neurons
in the human brain.
● It has been said that the project will be officially launched in 2023.
OVERVIEW OF BLUE GENE SUPERCOMPUTER
HOW BLUE BRAIN WORKS

Steps how a blue brain works

●DATA ACQUISITION

●SIMULATION

●VISUALIZATION
1. DATA ACQUISITION
● The data from the human brain is transferred to supercomputers
with the help of small robots called "NANOBOTS".
● These robots are so small that they can enter the spine and the
central nervous system also.
● When these nanobots enter the brain , they scan and monitor the
structure of neurons present in the brain.
● They carefully scan our brains and act as an interface for the
computer.
● When the data scanned by nanobots is entered into the
supercomputer, they act as a virtual brain.
2. SIMULATION
● It uses the primary data visualization software called
"NEURON", developed by IBM.
● The BBP-SDK software, written in C++ and wrapped in Java
and Python, is used as an interface between the computer and the
nanobots.
● The BBP-SDK collects the data
from nanobots and the data
visualization is done by
the "RT NEURON" software.
3. VISUALIZATION
● RT Neuron is the main application that the Blue Brain Project
uses for visualization of neural simulations.
● The final information is stored in a database and is used later as
a virtual brain.
● "RT NEURON" acts as an output and nanobots give input to the
main software "Neuron" and is delivered in 3D.
● This 3D structure makes it easier for researchers to view the
model.
● The final information is stored in a database and is used as a
virtual brain.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
1.
REQUIREMENTS
Blue Gene supercomputer

2. Wide network

3. Memory with large storage capacity

4. A program that converts electric impulse from brain to input signals and vice versa
5. Linux and C++ software

6. Powerful NANOBOTS to act as interface between the computer and

natural brain
APPLICATIONS
1. A good application of Blue Brain is in short-term memory.

2. This project will search for insights into how human beings
think and remember and save their knowledge virtually.

3. Scientists think that blue brains can help to cure Parkinson's

and Alzheimer's diseases.
ADVANTAGES
● Even after death, a person's intelligence remains.
● The knowledge and memories of great personalities can
be stored forever in the form of a virtual brain.
● Make decisions even without the presence of that person.
● Various brain diseases can be examined.
● Data and information can be remembered easily.
DISADVANTAGES
● Main disadvantage is that information stored can be easily
manipulated or misused by hackers.

● Humans will become computer dependent

● Fear of human cloning

CONCLUSION
● All memory will be transferred to a computer, making our job
easier .

● It will bring both benefits and harm to our society.

● This technology will be accepted all over the world very soon.
