O Management Information System (MIS) –

A management information system (MIS) is an


organized combination of people, hardware,
communication networks and data sources that
collects, transforms and distributes information in an
organization. An MIS helps decision making by
providing timely, relevant and accurate information to
managers.

BACKGROUND
O In 1971, three coffee fanatics opened a small coffee
shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market.
O In 1980,began selling coffee by cup.
O In 1982, Schultz joined the Starbucks marketing team.
O In1987,Howard Schultz bought Starbucks.
O In 1990, Orin Smith had joined the company as CEO.
O In 1992, the company had 140 such stores in the
Northwest and Chicago.
O In 2002, Schultz had unequivocally established
Starbucks as the dominant specialty-coffee brand in
North America.

O Starbucks uses management information system called-


IRIS(Intelligent Restaurant Information System)

1.Point Of Sale System(POS)-

It is a front of house till system. It consists in two touch


screen used by deployed partners , Store manager(SM),
Assistant manager(ASM) and Shift Supervisor(SS) that
need to insert their username and Specific password
before
to start with correct security Level.

O Paid in & paid out function helps in Security


measures for cash management and inventory controls
in the store.

2. The Manager Work Station (MWS)-

It is a back of house computer system compiles and


reports
all store information to effectively manage all aspects of
store business. It displays all the different functions
available on the Information System (IRIS). Accessed by
Partners and Managers with correct username and
password.

Functions of MWS for middle managers-

O Managers access the reports to track and sales by


product category for sales management.

O Reports also helps manager to carry out financial


audit.

O Managers to identify business requirements and


customer needs, to identify peak time in the store to
control wasting and track stock.

store profitability.

O Managers can use there reports to prepare short term


budget or annual budget.

O Reports provide information to identify customers


demand which helps in planning of menus and pricing
analysis.

O Computer and MIS are one of the important resources


for the restaurant chain industry. They spend huge
amount of money for buying, development and
maintenance of such systems.

decision making process and solving of different
problems in an organization.
