POLITICAL Lesson 9

INSTITUTIONS
LET’S GET STARTED:

• Identify or choose a person whom you recognize as a figure of


authority. Discuss your reasons why you chose that person and
what characteristics make them as authority figures.
INTRODUCTION
• Among the most significant social developments were the formulation of
laws that defined social behavior, promoted social order and settled
disputes.
POLITICS
• Refers through the activities through which people make, preserve and
amend the general rules under which they live.
• the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area,
especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or
hoping to achieve power.
POWER

• The ability to do something in order to achieve a desired


outcome.
AUTHORITY
• Legitimate Power
• A person who has the authority has the right to exercise power
• He/She is obeyed by the people
• Recognized as a leader
EXAMPLES:
PRE-HISTORIC TIMES
BAND- a small kin group
EXAMPLES:
Establishment of communities and civilizations
EXAMPLES:
Transformation to countries and nations
LEGITIMACY AND TYPES OF
AUTHORITY
• “Rightfulness”
• the quality or state of being legitimate
• popular acceptance of a government, political regime, or system of governance
• It transforms power into authority
WHAT MAKES A LAW OR RULE
ACCEPTED AND OBEYED BY PEOPLE?
• Max Weber identified 3 types of authority based on different
types of society.
1. Traditional
2. Charismatic
3. Legal-Rational
TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY

• They inherit the authority or the position has been


passed on to them
CHARISMATIC
• Have this special and extraordinary characteristics or qualities
• Very popular, highly persuasive, and inspiring
• Sometimes it can be manipulated through a “Propaganda”
LEGAL-RATIONAL
• Power and authority are legitimized by a clearly defined set of written
rules and laws.
• They can hold their positions after winning electoral process or
appointments
• Presidents and prime ministers are examples
POLITICAL ORGANIZATION AND
LEADERSHIP STRUCTURES
Political Organization- groups responsible for public decision making
and leadership
POLITICAL DYNASTIES
• the practices by the political families of monopolizing political power
and public offices
NATION VS STATE
Nation- a large body of people united by common descent, history,
culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory.

State- a political unit that has sovereignty. The supreme power or


authority over an area of territory and people within it.
ASSIGNMENT
Apply the concepts of power authority and influence in campus politics by
answering the following questions:
1. What types of authority do you observe? (10pts)
2. What roles and responsibilities do student leaders perform? (10pts)
