Configuring Slot Parameters

I/O Modules are plug and play. When configuring ports, use the
following numbering format:
Configure the type of I/O module
installed per slot using CLI • slot:port_number
commands: • Examples:
• configure slot 2:4
<slot_number> module [G48T Represents port 4 for the I/O module
| G48P| G24X | 10G4X ] installed in slot 2
3:6-8,11
Unconfigure module type: Represents ports 6 through 8 and 11
• unconfigure slot on slot 3
<slot_number>
Remove all slot configuration:
• clear slot <slot_number>

Configurable Port Parameters

Ports on the switch can be configured in the following ways:

Enabling and disabling individual ports
Enabling and disabling auto-negotiation
Configuring the port speed
Configuring half- or full-duplex mode
Creating link aggregation groups on multiple ports
Enabling or disabling discovery protocols
Configuring QoS on a port-by-port basis

Auto-Negotiation, Speed, and Duplex

Flow control supported

Auto-Negotiation
• Enabled by default
• May be disabled
Duplex and speed can be
manually configured for:
• Copper 10/100/1000
Gigabit Ethernet
• Gigabit port is always full-duplex
Auto polarity can be on or off on
copper ports

Slide 5
enable jumbo-frame ports [all | <ports list>]
configure jumbo-frame size <jumbo_frame_mtu>
configure ip-mtu <mtu_size> vlan <vlan name>

Jumbo Frames

Jumbo frames are Ethernet frames that are between 1523 and 9216
bytes.
Extreme Networks switches support switching and routing of
jumbo frames at wire speed on all ports.
Switch supports jumbo frames and IP fragmentation.

Slide 6
Link Aggregation

Allows a switch to use multiple ports as a single logical port.

Allows increased bandwidth and resilience.
Supported on all Extreme Networks switches.
• May also be compatible with third-party “trunking” or sharing algorithms.
• Must be enabled at both ends.
• Same algorithm should be selected on both ends of the LAG.

Slide 7
Link Aggregation (Continued…)

Although the traffic travels down

multiple physical links, it can be TX TX TX TX
considered as a single logical
link.
Received traffic is re-combined
and seen as a single traffic
stream.

Slide 8
Link Aggregation Algorithms

Address-Based Link Aggregation

• Packets are distributed based on layer 2, layer 2 and 3 or layer 2, 3, and 4
source and destination header information.
• A physical link is used for all matching packets to ensure that session
packets arrive in sequence.
• Provides the most even distribution of packets.

Slide 9
Link Aggregation Algorithms (Continued…)

Port-Based Link Aggregation

• The outgoing port is selected depending on the port the traffic arrives on.
• Drawback - Can lead to an uneven distribution of packets.

Slide 10
Dynamic Link Aggregation

Uses IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Control Protocol to:

• Dynamically determine if link aggregation is possible.
• Automatically enables and configures link aggregation.
• Dynamically adds or deletes ports from the link aggregation group.
Ports are active up to the limit of the hardware. Additional ports are
standby.
When an active port fails, the standby port is dynamically added to
the LAG.
The group is only enabled when LACP detects that the other end is
also using LACP.
LACP does not control the packet distribution algorithm.

Slide 11
Link Aggregation Capabilities

Note: On this slide, the first limitation number applies to

BlackDiamond 8800 and Summit X450 series; the second
applies to the BlackDiamond 10808 and BlackDiamond 12804.
A static LAG can include a maximum of 8 or 16 ports.
A dynamic LAG can include a maximum of 16 or 32 ports; out of
these up to 8 or 16 can be active links and the remaining 8 or 16 are
standby links.
The maximum number of LAGs is 32 or 128.
BlackDiamond 10808 and BlackDiamond 8800 switches support
Cross-Module Link Aggregation (CMLA).
Ports in the group do not need to be contiguous.

Slide 12
Link Aggregation Capabilities Continued

BlackDiamond 10808 and BlackDiamond 12804 supports port-based

(default) and address-based link aggregation but cannot specify L2
or L3 for the address-based algorithm.
BlackDiamond 8800 series and Summit X450 series switches only
support address-based link aggregation algorithm.
Broadcast, multicast, or unknown unicast packet are treated
differently on different switch models.

Slide 13
Enabling Link Aggregation

To enable dynamic link aggregation:

• enable sharing <port> grouping <port_list>
{algorithm [port-based |
address-based {L2 | L3 | L3_L4}]} {lacp}
The first port in the group is configured to be the logical port.
• The logical port represents the entire port group for port configuration.
Port-based only supported on BlackDiamond 10808 and 12804.
L2 or L3 address-based only supported on the BlackDiamond 8800
series and Summit X450 switches.
L3_L4 address-based plus IP port only supported on the
Summit X450a, X450e switches and BlackDiamond 8800 a-series
and e-series modules.

Slide 14
Configuring Dynamic Link Aggregation

To set the LACP priority:

• configure sharing lacp system-priority 3
• Lowest priority controls LACP.
• Priority 0 removes setting.
• MAC address is used as default priority.
Create the LAG with one port then add or delete ports dynamically.
To dynamically add ports to a link aggregation group:
• configure sharing <port> add ports <port_list>
• Ports must be enabled to be added.

LLDP

LLDP devices periodically transmit information to its neighbors in a

message called a LLDP Data Unit (LLDPDU).
• Each message consist of elements called Type Length Value.
TLVs include: Chassis ID, Port ID, Port Description, System name,
System capabilities, System description, VLAN ID, etc.
Information is available as SNMP MIB objects.
Provides multivendor device discover for IP telephones, wireless
devices, network elements.
