Doors
Exterior Interior Doors

Exterior doors are basically entrance and exit doors Interior Doors Unlike exterior doors, interior doors don’t
that play a vital role in ensuring the security of your undergo the severities of weather. Instead, they are primarily
home in all weather conditions. designed to separate rooms, maintaining privacy.

For this reason, they are usually constructed using These are the reasons why they are generally thinner than
steel or wood while keeping thickness, stability, and exterior doors
durability in mind.
STEPS TO INSTALL WOODEN DOOR

1. Remove the old door and frame. ...

2. Measure and level the rough opening. ...
3. Check the sill. ...
4. Adjust the jamb according to the measurement you took. ...
5. Secure the frame with shims. ...
6. Screw the frame into place. ...
7. Set the door in place and test it. ...
8. Fit the trim and finish up.
Doors types (according to how they open)

Sliding doors

are exterior doors used on the back or side of the house,

usually opening onto a patio or a deck.

But sliding doors can also find their way onto the
interior of the house in closets, utility rooms or pantries.

They move on a track as you push them open so they

don’t protrude on space at all.
French doors:-

Untimely elegant French doors are statement-making. They’re

double doors that are mainly composed of glass panes.

The two doors open inward and can open together or

independently. French doors are usually used as exterior doors
since they give rooms plenty of extra light.

Still, they’re useful for dividing rooms without enclosing the

space, so it helps the living space appear more spacious
Pocket doors

Pocket doors are very similar to sliding doors, but these

disappear into a wall when they’re open.

They’re perfect for powder rooms, closets and bathrooms.

Pocket doors move on a track into a door slab contained within

a “pocket” or hollow space in the wall.
Folding door:

If you are looking for a seamless connection inside and out of

your house, choose bifold. Bifold would be the best option for
your needs.

bifolding designs are not like Dutch or French but, they give
stack neatly out of the way, providing gloriously open access to
the garden and an expansive feeling inside.

Bifold doors are usually lightweight interior doors that fold

toward the user.

As the doors fold, they simultaneously slide open, which is

why they’re commonly used to cover closets, utility rooms and
kitchens.

However, some modern bifold doors made of glass and steel

frames can be great options for exteriors
Revolving Doors

Revolving Doors A staple in public buildings, revolving doors

consist of a rotating shaft and four “wings” or glass panels. The
bottom part has ball bearings to reduce noises. A person who
goes through the door can anticipate the other person coming,
making access smoother and easier.

Pros: Help with traffic flow, converse energy in air-conditioned

buildings, add elegant touch

Cons: Expensive, high-maintenance, can hinder smooth

evacuation during emergency
Roller Door

Roller Door Types are mostly used for garages and storage
facilities however they are an extremely trendy addition to a
living room for instance.

We can also utilize a roller door to separate the interior home

from the deck or garden.

Roller doors don’t require much space and are available in

different materials that can easily match your house’s style.

They roll up to the ceiling when opened.

Storm Doors

Storm doors are supplementary doors that are mounted on the

outside of exterior doors. Their purpose is to protect the door
against inclement weather and to reduce drafts indoors.

Storm doors are meant to be installed in the early fall and

removed in the spring. While some homeowners may find this a
troublesome annual task, the benefit provided by the storm door
is well worth
Hinged door

Hinged door types are generally made of either a solid wooden

panel door or a hollow-cored door affixed to a door jamb with
two or more hinges.

These are too common and are useful in almost any application
in which a door is required. These doors are generally located as
front entry, rear entry, interior, and wardrobe doors.
Swing Doors

are much similar to hinged doors, but

here the Hinge can be rotated in either
direction. In these types of doors,

a shutter is fixed to the frame with

double action spring hinges which
enables the movement on either side
Materials

Bamboo

Doors composed of bamboo-jute have the benefit

of being water-resistant, rust-resistant, termite
resistant, environmentally friendly, bio-
degradable, and expense efficient.
Glass Door

Glass is most commonly used for windows and doors,

primarily for paneling. It depends on the owner
whether like to use glass, doors can be made out of
glass for particular areas.Generally, glass doors‘ most
suitable location is on the backside as it offers an
unblocked view of the yard or garden.
Aluminum Doors

When you plan to give elegant look to your house, what

different kinds of doors do you prefer? Perhaps the best choice
for you would be aluminum.Aluminum doors are already the
first-choice option for contemporary architecture because of the
security, aesthetics, and insulation properties it gives

Aluminum doors can be used for both residential and

commercial purposes – it’s perfect for glazing and glass fronts,
providing you with a high–quality frame
Fibre Glass Door

Generally, glass fiber is manufactured by

bonding fiber with resin that can be utilized to
produce a variety of products consisting of
bathtubs, doors and windows, and so on
Steel Doors

Steel doors are most suitable for exterior–facing doors that need
to withstand heavy traffic and exterior elements. Nowadays,
steel doors can also be installed in a residence though they are
more commonly used for stores, schools, and commercial
buildings.
Louvered Doors

These types of doors are used when privacy with

natural ventilation and quietness for rest is
desired, as they allow free passage of air even
when closed. Louvered doors can be used to
help ventilate certain areas of your home, to add
a small amount of privacy to otherwise open
space, or as room dividers.
• Introduction PINE WOOD
• Pine is a coniferous wood that can be found in a variety of locations in the Northern Hemisphere. It is one of the most popular woods used in
manufacturing and carpentry and can be found in many homes around the world in the form of flooring, windows, furniture and so on.
• There are more than 126 classified species of pine, under the Pinus genus.
• Distribution of pine
• Pine trees are distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and can be found in northern, eastern and central Europe, as well as America, Mexico and
mid and southern Canada.
• In Germany, pine trees occupy the second highest proportion of wooded areas, with only spruce commanding more space.
• Many of these regions host native species of pine tree, with some species only being found in one particular area. For example, Sumatran pine can be
found crossing the equator, whereas many Canadian pine species can be found around east of the Rocky Mountains, Mackenzie River, and Cape Breton
Island in Nova Scotia.
• Description of pine
• Pine trees can reach up to 260 ft in height and can live for up to 1,000 years, with some species exceeding even that. The Pinus Longaeva or Great Basin
bristlecone pine is one of the longest living pines in the world. A tree of this species can be found in the White Mountains of California, that is estimated to
be over 4,900 years old.
• The bark of a pine tree is usually quite thick and dense, but there are some species which have thinner, flakier bark.
• All pines appear to grow successfully in soil which is primarily acidic, with some thriving on calcium-rich soils, too. They require exceptional drainage,
and some even flourish after forest fires, requiring the fire to rejuvenate their seedlings. There are also some species of pine, such as mountain pine and
bristlecone pine which thrive in higher altitudes, which is why it is often possible to see pine trees lining mountainsides.
• Uses of pine
• As an extremely popular choice of material for many carpenters around the world, there are a variety of ways in which pine wood is used.
• Paper is often made using the pulp of the pine tree, and it is also widely used in carpentry for furniture due to its fine, smooth grain. The knots which are
produced in pine wood are usually small and neat, and make a beautiful addition to the wood; they are chosen to give the furniture a clean, rustic look.
• Although it is classed as a soft wood, pine is one of the strongest softwoods on the planet, with many carpenters and manufacturers preferring to use it over
the softer spruce for creating furniture.

• Introduction MAHOGANY WOOD
• Mahogany is classified as a hardwood and is commonly found in the Americas, particularly in Central America. It has been a massive part of Central American  culture, being the
national tree of the Dominican Republic and Belize, as well and featuring on the Coat of Arms and the flag of Belize.
• Species of mahogany
• There are three species of mahogany:
• Honduran mahogany – located anywhere between Mexico and as far down as the southern Amazon rainforest in Brazil.
• Cuban mahogany – native to southern Florida and the Caribbean, but does not have great widespread commercial use.
• Pacific Coast mahogany – said to be a smaller version of the Honduran mahogany species by botanists, but it is smaller and typically found in dry forest in Central America.
• Mahogany features
• Although botanists consider it be to a hardwood, it is not one of the hardest woods available when it comes to woodworking. Woodcarvers say working with mahogany is
relatively easy, due to its structure and durability.
• Mahogany has a straight, fine, and even grain that is usually free of voids or pockets. Because of this, it is suitable to use in  furniture, such as chest of drawers, tables, cabinets,
and so on.
• Another reason mahogany is used in furniture is because it has a reddish-brown hue which darkens over time, which makes the it look exquisite and of high  quality.
• Uses of mahogany
• Mahogany has been used in the production of furniture since the middle of the 18th century. At this time, American woodcutters and craftsmen could travel to Mexico and Central
America to harvest the mahogany that was available.
• Mahogany resists wood rot when exposed to the elements, especially water; this has made it very attractive to shipbuilders around the world, and a great number of boats have
been constructed using mahogany.
• It is also considered a tone wood, which means it possesses tonal properties that are ideal for wooden stringed instruments. Other tone woods include rosewood, maple, ash, and
basswood. Because of this, mahogany has been used to create parts of string instruments, such as the backs, sides, and necks of acoustic guitars, as well as the body of electric
guitars. The most popular guitar that uses mahogany as the body is the Gibson Les Paul, one of the most iconic guitars of all time.
• Because of its decline in its natural habitat, people have cultivated mahogany across the world, giving them the name of ‘true mahogany’, whereas the species mentioned at the
beginning are known as ‘genuine mahogany’.

OAK WOOD
• Introduction
• Considered to be the traditional carving wood, oak is characterised by its strength and sturdiness, with a very defined grain. Consisting of dozens of species of varied colours,
white and red oak are typically more common in carving. An extremely popular choice of wood for carving, English Oak is durable and strong, but hard to work with.
• Recommended for carvers with a bit of experience, it’s ideal for larger pieces because of its coarse grain. Fine work tends to result in the wood breaking away at the edges,
which ruins the design. Suitable for outdoor pieces, it requires adequate treatment to prevent cracking and warping.
• White oak
• White oak, also known by its scientific name Quercus alba, is a strong and rot resistant wood commonly used because of its cost effectiveness. Very durable and resistant to
the environment, it allows for great results when carving, either by hand or with tools. However, its high shrinkage value doesn’t allow for dimensional stability, and in
contact with iron, especially if wet, it can become discoloured and stained.
• White oak’s heartwood has a light to medium brown colour, and an almost white sapwood that isn’t always well-defined against the heartwood. Its grain is straight and
coarse, with an uneven texture. The endgrain is ring-porous and it consists of around two to four rows of large earlywood pores and small latewood pores in a radial
arrangement.
• Red oak
• Also known as Quercus rubra, red oak has a light to medium brown with a reddish tint heartwood, and an almost white to light brown sapwood. The colours alone however,
aren’t enough to distinguish red oak from white oak. Red oak has a straight, coarse, and uneven grain with large pores but, unlike white oak, red oak is less resistant to rot and
to insects and has a tendency to stain when in contact with water.
• Both hand and tool carving techniques are suited ot red oak, although similar to white oak, it has high shrinkage values that mean it may not maintain its dimensional
stability. Popular uses include in furniture and flooring due to the wood’s strength and durability.
• Oak carving tips
• This popular hardwood can be difficult to work with due to how sensitive the grains are to the direction designs are carved in. The hardness can also prove to be challenging
for beginners, who should avoid oak wood until more practice and expertise is developed to allow for better control of tools and machinery.
• A simple design will allow for better accuracy when carving, as details may be lost due to how difficult oak wood is to carve. Practicing on a spare piece of oak will allow a
better assessment of how long the project will take and the level of proficiency required.
• Carbon paper is typically used when carving to transfer a design onto the wood, as it eases the initial process and design.
• As oak is a hardwood, sharp and efficient tools are required for proper carving.

BEECH WOOD
• Color/Appearance: Beech is typically a pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. Veneer
tends to be slightly darker colored, as slicing the veneer usually requires the wood to be prepared with
steam, which gives the wood a more golden tone. Flatsawn surfaces tend to be very plain, while
quartersawn surfaces exhibit a silvery fleck pattern.
• Grain/Texture: Grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture. Moderate natural luster.
• Rot Resistance: Beech is considered non-durable or perishable; it is also susceptible to insect attack.
• Workability: Overall good workability; it machines well, and glues, finishes, and turns well. Beech also
responds superbly to steam-bending. It does, however, have a large amount of movement in service, so
movement and wood stability must be taken into account.
• Odor: No characteristic odor.
• Allergies/Toxicity: Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, European Beech has been reported as
been reported as a sensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory
irritation. See the articles Wood Allergies and Toxicity and Wood Dust Safety for more information.
• Pricing/Availability: European Beech is widely available across Europe, and it very economically priced
within its natural range.
• Sustainability: This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of
Threatened Species.
• Common Uses: Lumber, veneer, flooring, boatbuilding, furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments (piano
pinblocks), plywood, and turned objects.
• Comments: Beech is an important and widely-used hardwood in Europe. Its hardness, wear-resistance,
strength, and excellent bending capabilities—coupled with its low price—make this hardwood a mainstay
for many European woodworkers. Depending on soil conditions, European Beech can grow to very large
sizes, and wide, long lumber is commonly available for use.
WOOD VENEER

They are thin strips of wood of uniform thickness, cut by peeling,

slicing, or sawing logs. It is mainly used in the manufacture of
plywood panels, by gluing them together with glue. These slices are
usually arranged so that the orientation of the fibers in one slice is
perpendicular to the orientation of the fibers in the next. Such an
arrangement leads to an increase in the strength of the plywood
panels (we have discussed in the blog the types of wood used in
furniture more about this) Most wood veneer is cut from natural
wood, and it includes many other types of wood as well. There are
several methods for obtaining wood veneer, but the most widely
used method is the rotary cutting method. In this method, the stem
is placed in a lathe and then rotated toward a knife extending along
its length. The wood veneer is folded into long strips that look very
similar to the rugs of a roll of paper or cloth. The thickness of the
veneer ranges between 0.25 and 9.5 mm, and most of the rotary
veneer is cut with thicknesses ranging between 1.3 and 3.6 mm

What Size Door Hinge is Right for my Door?

In general, most homes are going to use the standard-sized hinge.

This is a hinge that measures 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches. Measurements of door hinges are taken from the bottom
edge of the hinge up to the top edge of the hinge. Then, the other measurement is taken from the outside edge of the
hinge to the inside when the hinge is open.

Those who are looking for exterior door hinges usually need a 4-inch hinge; however, this is not always the case
_ Hinges:
1_The Butt Hinge:

One of the most common options for an exterior door hinge is called the butt hinge. These hinges have two identical leaves.
One leaf is able to move while the other leaf is fixed in place. Then, these leaves are attached to a curled barrel which gives
the door the ability to open. One of the reasons why people love butt hinges is that they can support a lot of weight. If you
have a steel or fiberglass door, you’ll want to consider using butt hinges because they can support the extreme weight. Other
hinges might be damaged by the extreme weight.
2_The Flush Hinge:

are another common option, particularly in small rooms. These hinges are designed to
save space. One of the leaves compresses against the other when the door is closed,
saving space. Despite their small, compact size, flush hinges are still quite durable. On
the other hand, they do not have the strength of butt hinges and will break if the door is
too heavy.

3_The Ball Bearing hinge:

This is different from the ball-bearing butt hinge. A ball bearing hinge is one of the most
durable options on the market. This hinge has been designed to support wide, heavy
doors. In this hinge, a ball bearing is placed between two separate knuckles. It is also
called the plain bearing hinge. The purpose of a ball bearing hinge is to reduce the
friction between the two knuckles which wears down the hinge over time. These are
most commonly used for entry doors which tend to be larger and see more use. Finally,
a ball bearing hinge will also open and close smoothly, reducing squeaking and friction.
This would be a great gate hinge.
4_The Case Hinge :

Case hinges have a lot of similarities to butt hinges. Therefore, they are often used
for front doors which tend to be larger, wider, and heavier. The biggest difference between
case hinges and butt hinges is that case hinges are a bit more stylish, flashy, and
decorative. Therefore, they tend to look good to visitors and guests as they walk through
the door. Case hinges are so varied in their shape, style, and color that they are even found
in suitcases. The case hinge can be used for a cabinet door as a cabinet hinge as well

5_The Heavy Duty Hinge :

The name of this hinge is self-explanatory. The biggest difference between a heavy-duty

hinge and a typical hinge is that a heavy-duty hinge is thicker. It is more than a quarter-
inch thicker than a typical hinge. In this sense, a heavy-duty hinge can be designed to fit
the shape and function of any of the other hinge types above by using thicker materials.A
heavy-duty hinge is great for a large, heavy door that is used regularly. These types of
hinges are ideal for more intense applications, like for personal safes or safes in banks.
6_The Double Action Spring Hinge :

One of the first types of interior door hinges is referred to as the double-action spring.

While these are among the most popular interior door hinges, they aren’t able to be used
outside because they cannot handle the weight of a steel or fiberglass door. This spring
loaded hinge is most commonly found in the kitchen and dining room. Some of the other
names people might use to refer to this type of hinge include the café, sway, swing, and
saloon door hinge.Due to the design of the hinges, they allow the door to swing in both
directions. There are two cylinders that come together against a square hinge leaf. This
design draws a stark contrast between it and the exterior door hinges

7_The Bi Fold Hinge :

The Bi Fold hinge is a little bit less common than other door hinges; however, they do serve
a unique purpose. In some situations, people might need a hinge with multiple leaves that
are of varying lengths. This is the design of a bi-fold hinge. There are multiple pivots in this
hinge that allow the door to move to a greater extent. In some cases, people might even be
able to customize the lengths of the leaves to serve a specific purpose. That makes the bi-
fold hinge a good choice for certain types of interior doors.
8_The Concealed Hinge :

Also called an invisible hinge or a hidden hinge, a concealed hinge is designed to do exactly
that. A concealed hinge is meant to be used but not seen. This hinge is popular among people
who are looking to show off the design of their door. This includes certain types of interior
doors.

9_The Flag Hinge :

This type of hinge isn’t very common; however, it is seen from time to time. The flag
hinge is commonly found attached to PVC doors. The design of this hinge is unique. Instead
of having two hinges that attach to a central knuckle, this hinge has one leaf that attaches to
a pin.The hinge is designed to swivel around the pin, giving the hinge a total range of 360
degrees. There are very specific situations where a flag hinge might be needed. These will
be used in rotating doors often found at the fronts of malls and airports.
10_The Take Apart Hinge :

This hinge has been designed with exactly that purpose in mind. In some
cases, people might need to take down a door and move it somewhere
else. This is common if someone is moving furniture in or out of a room.

If this happens on a frequent basis, a take-apart hinge might be a good

idea.

The major advantage of this hinge is that it allows someone to remove

their door easily.

I actually recently took advantage of these hinges when I removed the

door from my child’s room.

This hinge is made up of one leaf and a central pin. To take down the
door, simply remove the central pin.

Then, the door can be taken down. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
door handles
1_Lever on backplate handles :

Lever on backplate handles are handles that are supplied with a backplate. They are a
traditional style handle and can be supplied just as a lever with backplate, with a lever and a
lock, or with just a thumb turn, most commonly used for bathrooms.

The backplate provides an opportunity to choose from a range of styles, from the classic
shape, to square, curved or even fleur de lys styled backplates for more traditional buildings.

2_D Pull handles :

D pull handles are a great solution to doors that do not require latches and open inwards.
Fitted externally onto the door, they come in a wide range of styles and are often chosen for
their simplicity and ease of use.

Choose from curved D handles, straight edge handles and T handles which have extensions
at each end to create a more linear appeal
3_Doorknobs :

Door knobs have been in use for hundreds of years, and are typically spherical shaped.

They can be used to open latches by turning and can be paired with locks for security if

Filling door:
It is pure wood, without spaces between its parts, so it is more
solid than the pressing door, and therefore it is often used for
external doors. Its manifestations differ from one door to
another, and its parts are mostly assembled by the “interlock”
method without the use of nails. One of its disadvantages is that
it is difficult to maintain and clean, and voids may appear as a
result of the wrong assembly of its parts

They are wooden beams and uprights that are stuffed in two
ways. To fill the voids with 12 mm counter panels.

This type is not recommended due to the possibility of the door

slamming after a period of time.

The filling should be made of small pieces of thick and sorted

wood according to the desired shape, bearing in mind that the
small pieces of filling, in addition to the door posts, may be of
solid magno or white swede according to desire and price.
I know that there are no solid wood doors like a single panel of magno or oak
due to the difficulty of providing these types with the width of the door, but
there are doors with their beams and legs and the filling inside them of solid
magno or oak as explained above.

(The space is estimated to be the width of the beam itself) and make sure of
this in the carpentry before covering the doors or opening one of the doors
when supplying the house

Door trims are the first part of the door installation process and
have a number of points:

Throttle wood should be carefully checked and free of cracks or

knots. If there is a knot in one of the walls of the throat, it must
be treated by burning to remove the oils from it.
The sockets are installed before the plastering, taking into
account their protrusion from the two edges of the wall, so that
they are aligned with the bulge, so that they are equal to the
plasterwork later on.

It is preferable to paint the throats from the back, as well as

their lower edges, which will be covered with tiles, with
bitumen to prevent moisture from entering the throat wood.

It is possible to install the sockets after the completion of

plastering or after that also by using long plugs so that the width
of the throat is the width of the end wall itself after plastering it.

The block. The corners of the throat wood are fixed to each
other by means of interlocking, glue and nails as well.
