TITHING
TITHING
BASIC TRUTHS
• God created everything
• Gn 1:1-31 (Story of Creation)
• Gn 2:1-23 (Garden of Eden)
• Everything that God creates is good
• God is the owner of all things
• Ps 24:1
 The earth is the Lord’s and all it holds, the world and those who dwell in it
• God gave man stewardship/management over the material universe
TITHING
BASIC TRUTHS
Because He created only good things, God is not against wealth, and since God
only entrusted these to us. Therefore, our attitude towards material things
should be one of appreciative detachment.
TITHING
STEWARDSHIP
• We are stewards, managers, not masters over the things God has entrusted
to us, and we are called to manage what has been entrusted to us wisely
and according to God’s plan.

• Since the time of Abraham, God’s people have expressed their stewardship
over their possessions through tithing, resource sharing and alms giving.
They have always formed an important aspect of the relationship of God’s
people with the Lord.
TITHING
TITHING
• Tithing means returning a tenth part of our possessions, our earnings,
income or received possessions to God.

• Through tithing, we acknowledge God as owner of our resources and

admit that we are only stewards.

Tithing expresses further that our life, our security, all blessings
and happiness reside in God and not in our possessions. We are only
stewards
TITHING
OLD TESTAMENT PRACTICE
• Dt. 14:22-29 prescribes an annual tithe of grain, wine, oil, and firstlings.
• Nm. 18-21-32 grants the tithes of all Israel to the Levites.
• Lv. 27:30-33 states that the tithes are holy to Yahweh.
30 “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of
the trees, is the LORD's; it is holy to the LORD. 31 If a man wishes to redeem
some of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. 32 And every tithe of herds and
flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman's staff, shall
be holy to the LORD. 33 One shall not differentiate between good or bad,
neither shall he make a substitute for it; and if he does substitute for it, then
both it and the substitute shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.”
• Mal. 3:8-12 talks of God’s requirement to bring tithes to the storehouse.
TITHING
NEW TESTAMENT PRACTICE
• The teaching on tithing is not specific but it is mentioned in the New
Testament.

• One who is being instructed in the word should share all good things with his
instructor – Gal 6:6

•  “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes* of mint
and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law:
judgment and mercy and fidelity. [But] these you should have done, without
neglecting the others. – MT 23:33
TITHING
THE TEACHING OF THE CHURCH FATHERS, THEOLOGIANS
AND SAINTS
• St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyon: those who have received liberty must set aside all their possessions
for the Lord’s purpose
• Origen, a Christian writer teacher and theologian: regards tithing as something to be far exceeded
by Christian giving
• St. Agustine: regards tithing as something that is due by Christians to God.
• St. Jerome: even if Christians cannot, as they should, sell all and give to the poor, they should at
least imitate the Jews by giving tithes and first fruits.
• St. Ambrose: Tithes are due from every substance given to men by God.
• St. Cesar of Arles: Tithes are to be paid for the sake not of God who receives them, but for those
who pay them, whose eternal salvation depends upon faithful payment; .Give tithe of all your
profits to the Church for the clergy and the poor and give alms from the ninetenth which remain in
your possession. (Serm 18, 1;14,3 etc.)
• Council of Macon, France in 585 AD: anyone who refuses to pay tithes was to be
excommunicated.
TITHING
THE TEACHING OF THE CHURCH FATHERS, THEOLOGIANS
AND SAINTS
• 13th century Church legislation: extended the tithes from agrarian products to all kinds of
profits and wages.
• 1917 Code of the Canon Law: stipulates the obligation of Catholics to support the Church.
• New Code of Canon Law (1983): affirms the right of the Church to demand support for its
ministers, worship, apostolic and charitable works (Canon 1260), but prefers that this will
be a free-will offering.
TITHING
THE TEACHING AND PRACTICE OF THE CHURCH
• Tithe consists of 10% of all income derived from whatever source.
• The purpose of tithes is to support the Church community to fulfill its
missions.
• Tithe and Alms are to be distinguished.
• At times the obligation to pay tithes was considered to be so serious that
non-compliance was grounds for excommunication (Council of Macon in
585), or thought to endanger the persons eternal salvation (St. Caesar of
Aries).
• The Church Fathers stressed that we need to support the Church not only
with our finances, but with our gifts and talents and our time as well.
TITHING
PRACTICE AT BCBP
• Financial giving is part of a mature Christian life. If this area is not in good order, the
person has not fully committed to the BCBP community, its vision and mission and
certainly not its core values
• BCBP members are Christians called to a life of service, sharing and stewardship
• Every single member of the BCBP, being a part of God’s Church, shares its
responsibility for its continued existence according to his capacity.
• No community has the right to have any programs for which its members are not
prepared to assume full financial responsibility.

.He who sown sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will
reap bountifully. Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly
decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver..
4 reasons of Tithing

• Be more like God

• Put God First
• Increase in Our faith
• Support Church Ministry (such
as this Community. The BCBP)
