ADA Standards - Accessible Route and Specific Elements
DEFINITION:
- Site arrival points: accessible parking spaces and accessible passenger loading zones, public transit stops located on sites, and
public street and sidewalk

At least 1 accessible route must be provided
within the site, from the site arrival points to
accessible facility entrances

[§206.2.8] Employee Work Areas
Requirement:
- Common use circulation paths must be
accessible in employee work areas that are
1,000 sq. ft. or more in size
[§403.5] Clearances
REQUIREMENT:
- Minimum width should be 36 in
- In some case, the width can reduce to 32 in for a maximum
distance of 24 in
- Minimum clearance shall be 36 in x 48 in
REQUIREMENT:
- Greater clearance required for 180 degree
turns
- For the obstruction width less than 48 in:
The width at the turn must be at least
48 in, and at least 42 in approaching the
turn
The width at the turn must be at least
60 in, if the width approaching the turn
is at least 36 in
[§403.5.3] Passing Space
REQUIREMENT:
- Passing space is required every 200 feet
- Should be 60 in minimum x 60 in minimum space or T-shaped space
with each side is at least 48 in
[§403.6, §505] Handrails Along Walking Surfaces
REQUIREMENT:
- Location: Handrails are required at ramps with a rise greater than
6” and at stairs that are part of a means of egress, but not at
other locations.
- Height: Top of gripping surfaces of handrails shall be between 34
in - 38 in vertically above the walking surface
- Clearance: Distance between the gripping surface of handrails
and the adjacent surface shall be at least 1 ½ in

[§802] Wheelchair Spaces, Companion Seats & Designated aisle seats
NOTE:
- Wheelchair spaces shall adjoin accessible routes. Accessible
routes shall not overlap wheelchair spaces
- Access to any wheelchair space cannot overlap another
wheelchair space
[§802] Wheelchair Spaces, Companion Seats & Designated aisle seats
Requirements:
At least one companion seat shall be provided for each
wheelchair space. If two wheelchairs are next to each other,
there should be one companion seat on either side of the
wheelchair
Designated aisle seats are those seats with folding or retractable armrests.
5% of all aisle seats must be a designated aisle seat. These designated aisle seats must be located closest to accessible routes
and labeled with approved symbol
[§4.32] Minimum Clearances For Seating And Tables
Parallel Approach
Back Support:
The back support should be at least
42 in long
Should be above the seat surface
not more than 2 in
Requirement: The width of the back support
The seats are at least 42 in long, and 20 in - 24 in deep. should be at least 18 in
The height of the seat should be between 17in – 19 in The back support should be 2 ½ in
Clearance for the parallel accessible approach should be at least 48 maximum from the rear edge of the
