Activity 3- Distinctness

of the learner in a
Diverse Classroom
Narrative Report on Lecture
“PPST DOMAIN 3: DIVERSE LEARNERS
The domain of Diversity of Learners emphasizes the ideal that teachers
can facilitate the learning process in diverse types of learners, by first
recognizing and respecting individual differences, then using knowledge
about students’ differences, to design diverse sets of learning activities to
ensure that all students can attain appropriate learning goals.

Dr. Carl Balita in his lecture, give deeper explanation on this domain,
by putting the spotlight on the most important person in the educative
process and the reason for us why we are being a professional
licensed teacher- we are talking about the diverse learners .

According to Dr. Balita, the teachers should appreciate every person in

the classroom because the diversity of learners is anchored on our
respect and the celebration of what we called uniqueness and
individuality of each student, for us to produce an effective teaching
and learning and give importance to know as much of each student as
possible in terms of; family, background interest, dislikes and learning
styles

In fact having a deeper understanding of your students’ unique

interests, styles, and abilities as well as respecting their gender,
strengths, needs, interest, and experiences, is our assets to know
what’s the best for them and that is to provide them a different
instruction that includes wide variety of task or meaningful activities and
teaching techniques that will matches the learning content, abilities,
interest, and the needs of the learners which help them to improve
themselves and have an equal opportunity to enhance and showcase
their strengths and talents/skills.
Furthermore, in our observation, active students are highly evident. As the teacher used Inquiry-
Based Learning (IBL) strategies and activities in discussing their topic, “Ang Mangingisda”, a short
story wherein the teacher provides task questions for them, and the students were given an
opportunity to showcase their skills in storytelling and demonstrating important events in the story.
Also, some students shine on sharing their brilliant ideas about the moral lesson of the story which
only proves that they are intelligent in analyzing stories.
1. How much interaction is there in the virtual classroom? Describe how the students
interact with one another and with the teacher virtually. Are there groups that interact
more with the teacher than others?
Upon our observation, the
teacher demonstrates his
mastery of conducting a virtual
classroom using an internet
application. She instructs her
students on how to respond to
her question using the raise
hand button at the start of
class. There is a lot of
interaction in the classroom,
which we can see.
. We can see that the students are
really engaged in responding to the
teacher's inquiry about the story
"Ang Mangingisda." The student
excitedly shares their opinions and
ideas about what action they would
do if they were in the same
situation as the protagonist in the
story, such as whether they would
make the same decision as the
fisherman or not.

As the discussion progresses, we notice that the interaction between the teacher and the learner becomes increasingly
interactive, with the teacher providing many valuable key points that assess the student's answer, as well as good
feedback that encourages the learner to play an active part in the discussion. Although some of the students did not want
to participate in the discussion due to a poor internet connection, we also see that some of them did not do an advance
reading of the story. As a result, there is a dominant group that interacts more with the teacher, and another group that
silently observes the teacher's discussion.
2. Observe the learner’s behavior during the conduct of the
online class. How do they behave and interact differently?
We have noticed that when students have prior knowledge of the issue being
presented, we have seen that they interact and behave differently. There are students
that are active in sharing their thoughts and enthusiastically answering the teachers'
questions because they read the text or story in advance and, they communicate
effectively with their peers, who also have prior knowledge to broaden their thoughts
about the topic. On the contrary, the behavior and interaction of students who have no
prior knowledge are passive, they are always hesitant to answer the teacher's
inquiries, and they are inactive in the group/peer discussion.
3. Describe the relationship among the learners. Do the learners cooperate with or
complete against each other?
Based on our group observation, when it came to interaction, the
learners were divided into groups. There was cooperation with
them, and they have a healthy and positive relationship with each
other, but there are some competitions, such as when they were
explaining their opinions regarding the teacher's topic, they actively
justified their answer with concrete and logical explanations.
4. Who among the students participate actively? Who among them ask
for most help?
Because of the fast and reliable internet connection and adherence to the instruction
of the teacher to read the topic in advance, there were at least five students who
participated actively. Even though other people's internet is a little shaky, most of them
participate in the discussion with their teacher and express their needs for guidance
about the topic that has been discussed.
5. When the teacher is called and cannot answer the
teacher’s question, do the classmates try to help him? Or
do they click raise hand button, so that the teacher will call
them instead?
Yes, many students are missing and returning to Google Meet, and the
teacher recognizes that this is due to others' poor internet connections. Also,
by clicking the raise hand button, the teacher allows other students to respond
to the questions, and the teacher considers their comments as correct, such
as "you have your point, right" etc. Providing positive feedback that
encourages the learner to actively participate in the discussion.
ANALYZE
1. Identify the person who play the key roles in the
relationships and interactions in a virtual classroom.
What roles do they play? Is there somebody who
appears to be the leader, a mascot/joker, an attention
seeker, a little teacher, a doubter/ pessimist?
In the virtual classroom, crucial roles are played in the connections and
exchanges. There’s a student who takes on the role of a little teacher; she’s
energetic and engaged and always shares her thoughts with the rest of the class.
There’s a student who doesn’t show up in class and another who is always late.
And a trusted and reliable student whom her peers rely on to excuse them when
they are absent. These characteristics can be encountered in a teacher's setting.
The teacher’s ability to manage the class was never hampered by the diversity of
the students.
2. How does the teacher influence the class interaction considering the
individual differences of the students in a virtual classroom?
The teacher influences the class interaction by considering the individual differences of
the students in a virtual class, allowing them to share and discuss their ideas as well
as the teacher considering the students’ various characteristics. The teacher
disciplines the students in an efficient and respectful manner, especially those
students who arrive late to the meeting and those who do not attend the lesson but are
present in another class. She’s trying to figure out their reasons by asking their
classmates, so she can be aware of it. In this sense, the teacher is being fair and
mindful of her students’ situations and distinctions.
PROYEKTO

REFLECT
1. How did you feel as you observe the virtual
classroom? Did you feel a sense of oneness or unity
among the learners and in between the teacher and the
learners in a new normal classroom setting?
Upon our observation in the virtual classroom, we can feel the sense of oneness or
unity among the learners and the teacher in this new normal. Before the lesson proper,
the teacher makes sure that her students are in good condition. She calls their names
one by one, not just for attendance but also to be updated about their whereabouts. We
have also noticed students felt comfortable with their teacher. And we are glad that
despite the big adjustment in our educational system, they still give their best to get
along in this new normal wherein they still manage to be productive and able to
showcase their intelligence and skills. As the teacher used effective methods in
teaching and delivering their topic lessons, many students were actively participating
and reciting.
2. In the future, how would you want the learners in your
virtual classroom to interact? How will you, make it
happen?
In the near future, as we become teachers, we want our students to interact in
accordance with the topic of their lesson. When it comes to discussing a topic, we
want them to be more self-reliant. Our encouragement will motivate them to
become a better person. As a result, it is our responsibility to encourage them to
be role models for their peers. We will make it happen by studying some teaching
strategies that will reinforce our capability to facilitate our learners.
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your experiences when
you were their age? What similarities of differences do you have with the learners
you observed
Yes, as we observed the learners, we remembered our high school days. Through
class recitation and attendance. In our similarities, just like them, we actively
participate during class recitation. For us, it is important for students to be actively
involved in the recitation and apply the information that we have learned in lecture. On
the other hand, our differences are through class attendance as we go to school on
time because during our first period, all late students will no longer be able to enter
the classroom. The teachers’ reason is that if students come to school late, it can
distract other students and the flow of the lecture.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did
she/he or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and
cognitive)? How did it affect you?
There’s this terrifying and cold teacher who constantly scolds and yells at us for
little infractions. The impact of her energy on us was that we developed low self-
esteem, became more anxious and awkward in the class, all of which had a
negative impact on our cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being. We couldn’t
ask for her help if we didn’t understand the discussion because we were frightened
of being chastised and reprimanded. This became a lesson for us to always be a
good and kindhearted teacher regardless of the situation, and to put them at rest
and assure that they could always count on us.
3. Share your other insights here
As we finished this activity, we learned that there are many factors that can affect
the development of the students. A teacher’s personality, physical, social,
emotional, and environmental factors can affect students' learning. This can have
negative and positive effects on a learner’s destiny.
