Typical problems

Determine which of copper, brass, and a 1040 steel may be cold-worked so as to achieve
a minimum yield strength of 310 Mpa, while maintaining a minimum ductility of 27%EL.
For each of these alloys, the minimum cold work necessary to achieve the yield strength
may be determined from Figure(a), while the maximum possible cold work for the
ductility is found in Figure (c).

Tensile test was conducted on a steel specimen of diameter 12.5mm and gauge
length of 50mm. The loads at lower and upper yield points were 4500kg and 4600kg.
The maximum and fracture loads were 7500kg and 5000kg respectively. The gauge
length after fracture was 62.5mm. The diameter at fracture place was found to be
8.0mm. At a load of 2000kg, the total extension was 0.35mm. Determine the
followings;
1. Lower yield stress
2. Upper yield stress
3. Ultimate tensile stress (U.T.S)
4. Fracture stress
5. True fracture stress
6. % Elongation Modulus of resilience = (σy)2 / 2E
7. % Reduction in C/S area
8. Young’s modulus (E) Modulus of toughness = 0.66 X σu X ef
9. Modulus of resilience
10. Modulus of toughness.  T   E (1   E )  T  ln(1   E )

A cylindrical rod 500 mm long, having a diameter of 12.7 mm is to be subjected to a
tensile load. If the rod is to experience neither plastic deformation nor an elongation
of more than 1.3 mm. when the applied load is 29,000 N . Which candidate satisfy this
? Justify your choice(s).

A brass alloy to be used for a spring application must have a modulus of resilience of at
least 0.75 MPa. What must be its minimum yield strength?
Given modulus of elasticity of brass alloy is 100 GPa

Solution:
modulus of resilience is given by

Ur = (yield strength)**2 / 2E
