Fourier Series

Introduction

 There are too many functions which can be

represented in form of infinite series but in
modern science and engineering many problem
connected with oscillation, which require to
express series in form of infinite trigonometric in
terms of sine and cosine known as a Fourier
Series.
Application of Fourier Series

 Ithas a very wide application infield of

digital signal processing, wave forms of
electrical fields, vibrations, and conduction
of heat, etc.
Periodic Functions

  Afunction is said to be periodic if its function values
repeat at regular intervals of the independent variable.
Sine/Cosine Function

 Sine
  Function

 Cosine Function

Where:
A = Amplitude
x = period
Graphs of y = A sin(nx)

 y = sin x

 y = 5 sin 2x
Non-Sinusoidal Periodic Functions

a)
Fourier Theorem

 According to the Fourier Theorem, any practical periodic function of

frequency ω0 can be expressed as an infinite sum of sine or cosine functions
that are integral multiples of ω0.
Fourier Series

  Fourier Series expansion of f(x)

--- fundamental frequency

an and bn are called Fourier coefficients
