TOPIC INTRODUCTION

Well, this is our last week before the mocks…

In this Learn lesson we’re going to focus mainly on the Non-Fiction


Reading section. We’ll look at some hints and tips that will be useful
in improving your marks, particularly concerning how you present
your material.
Your mock exam will be on English Language Paper 1
Non-fiction & Transactional writing

Questions 1, 2 & 3 will be on an unseen non-


fiction text. Question 4 will be on one of the
non-fiction texts from section 1 of the
anthology. Question 5 will be a comparative
question between the unseen text and the
anthology text given.

The suggested time for section A of the paper


is 1hr 30 mins – leaving you 45 mins for
A copy of the Anthology text and the unknown text will be provided section B: Transactional writing

IMPORTANT POINTS
Using quotations and close analysis

Keep your quotations short and to the point:


Using just a few words is more powerful than copying out chunks of text: it
shows you are being selective in what you say

Copy out accurately:


Everything you copy (quote) from the text has to be in INVERTED COMMAS

Embed your quotation:


Put the quotation inside your own sentence, rather than sticking it in the
text on its own and then commenting on it
